To verify your qualification, read the four-digit code on your exam entry, then match it with the code on the syllabus and every resource you use. For this course the code is 0653. The related double-award route is 0654.
This is the first check in Combined Science qualification and scope, and every later lesson depends on it.
What does each code mean?
Combined Science 0653 is a single-award course. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is the double-award route.
The names sound alike, and both draw on biology, chemistry and physics, so it is easy to treat them as interchangeable. They are separate qualifications with their own syllabus documents.
You can read both on the Cambridge website, linked under sources. Always rely on the live pages for current details.
How do you check, step by step?
- Find your entry code. Ask your school or exam centre. Registration and entries belong to them, so they are the only reliable source.
- Write the code on a card and keep it with your notes.
- Open the matching syllabus from the Cambridge page for that code.
- Check each resource. Look for the code on the cover, the contents page or the first page of the syllabus-matched section.
- Mark each resource: matches, differs, or not stated.
- Treat “not stated” as unchecked, not as a match.
Worked example
Amira is entered for 0653. She has three resources.
| Resource | Label | Code printed | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revision guide | “IGCSE Sciences” | 0654 | Different course: use only after topic checks |
| Class notes | “Combined Science” | 0653 | Matches |
| Video playlist | “IGCSE Science” | none shown | Unchecked: look at the video description for a code |
Her next step for the playlist is to find a code in the description or on the channel page. If none appears, she compares a few topics against the 0653 syllabus before relying on it.
The mistake to watch for
A student reads “Combined” and “Co-ordinated” and decides they are the same thing.
Mistaken thought: “Both are combined sciences, so a Co-ordinated guide is fine.”
This ignores that 0654 is the double-award route with its own scope and assessment.
The correction is simple: the code decides, not the title. A guide for 0654 can still explain a shared idea clearly, but you check each topic against 0653 before you trust it. Lesson 4 shows the routine.
Self-check
1. A book cover says “Co-ordinated Sciences”. You are entered for 0653. What do you do?
Show answer
The book is written for a different qualification, 0654. Treat it as a possible source of explanation only, and check each topic against the 0653 syllabus before using it.
2. A website says “IGCSE Combined Science” and shows no code. Is it a match?
Show answer
Not confirmed. Look for a code on the page or syllabus link. If there is none, mark it unchecked and compare topics with the 0653 syllabus.
3. Who confirms which code you are entered for?
Show answer
Your school or exam centre. Entry and registration are handled by the centre, not by a tuition team.
What next?
Once the code is settled, identify your tier and exam year. If you want a teacher to go through your documents with you, Combined Science tuition is built around that kind of scoping. The scientific investigation critic is useful later, when the focus shifts to practical reasoning.
