We offer online one-to-one Cambridge IGCSE Chinese and Mandarin tuition for students anywhere in Malaysia. An experienced teacher is assigned to you, and the first step is a paid one-hour trial at that teacher’s confirmed rate, starting from RM80. It is a real taught lesson on your own work, and the rate is confirmed before you attend.

The teaching follows the code you are entered for: First Language Chinese 0509, Second Language Chinese 0523 or Foreign Language Mandarin 0547. They are three separate Cambridge qualifications, and their scope, task demands and entry routes are not interchangeable. Your Chinese stays in Chinese throughout.

Who does this tuition suit?

It suits students who want clearer Chinese writing and better-supported reading answers. The problem is usually specific, which is why individual attention works.

Here are situations students and parents describe:

  • You understand the passage, yet your answer repeats a sentence from it instead of answering the question.
  • Your composition opens with a memorised idiom that has nothing to do with the topic.
  • You know many characters but miss the main idea of a paragraph.
  • Your sentences are correct one by one, but the paragraph does not flow.
  • You are not sure whether the practice paper you found fits 0509, 0523 or 0547.
  • You speak Chinese at home and assume the First Language route must suit you.
  • You are learning Mandarin as a foreign language and want to practise speaking without feeling judged.

If one of these sounds like you, the gap is probably a habit that can be noticed, corrected and practised. If you are a parent reading for your child, the guide to choosing between tuition options sets out, fairly, when one-to-one teaching suits and when self-study or a group class may be enough.

What can individual teaching actually change?

In a class of many students, a teacher shows a model answer and moves on. In one-to-one teaching, the teacher can see your answer, separate what you understood from what you expressed, and ask you to redo the weak part while they watch. The example below shows how that works. All the Chinese stays in Chinese.

A teaching example: a reading answer and an opening sentence

Here is a short original passage, written for illustration.

周六早上,学校的环保社在操场旁边举办了旧书市集。小文本来只打算卖掉三本旧小说,可是看到同学们排队捐书,她也把家里的一箱课外书搬来了。最后,市集筹到的钱全部捐给了图书馆。

The question: 小文为什么搬来一箱课外书?

A typical first answer:

因为她喜欢看书。

Check 1, comprehension. The teacher asks: “文章里哪一句说明了原因?” The student rereads and finds 看到同学们排队捐书,她也把……搬来了. The answer “喜欢看书” sounds sensible, but the passage never says it. The student answered from general knowledge, not from the text.

Check 2, expression. The teacher sets the question aside and looks at how the answer is built. A supported answer needs the cause and the evidence from the passage. The teacher asks the student to say it in one sentence, then write it.

A revised answer, written by the student after this exchange:

因为她看到同学们排队捐书,所以也把家里的一箱课外书搬来了。

The revised answer names the cause the passage gives, in the student’s own structure. The improvement did not come from harder vocabulary. It came from separating what the text says from what sounds likely.

The same habit shows up in writing. Suppose the composition topic is 《一次难忘的义卖活动》, and a student begins:

光阴似箭,日月如梭,转眼间又过了一年。

The teacher asks: “这句话和义卖活动有什么关系?” The student sees there is none. After one more question, “那天早上你第一眼看到了什么?”, the student writes:

那天清晨,操场旁边已经摆满了书,同学们一边翻,一边小声讨论价钱。

The second opening is about the topic, concrete and the student’s own. The modules on writing accuracy and feedback, first-language composition and characters, words and context teach these skills in small steps. The clinic on memorised phrases without relevance shows the same repair with another example.

Honest limits

Tuition cannot do the reading or the writing for you in the exam, and it cannot replace reading Chinese outside lessons. A teacher can suggest useful things to read, though you have to read them.

Your writing and speaking must be your own. A teacher will not write compositions for you to submit, and will not supply memorised scripts. Entries, speaking test arrangements and any access arrangements belong to your school’s exam centre and Cambridge. No one can promise a grade, and we do not.

Which code and which exam year apply to me?

This is the question to settle first. The answer depends on your entry, not on your family’s language, your ethnicity or what a friend is taking.

Here is what to check:

  1. The code on your entry statement. Your school or exam centre can show you whether you are entered for 0509, 0523 or 0547.
  2. The exam year. Components, weightings and task requirements can change between exam years. The syllabus and exam-year navigator helps you find the right Cambridge page.
  3. The script and response instructions. Check which script your route uses and how responses are to be given, on the Cambridge page for your exam year.

Our guides explain each code in plain terms: 0509 code guide, 0523 code guide, 0547 code guide, and the lessons in Chinese qualification identification. Registration, entries and results are handled by your exam centre and Cambridge, not by us.

How do the skills break down?

Chinese is easier to manage once you see the skill families, and which ones your code uses.

Mandarin foundations and speaking, for the Foreign Language route: Mandarin communication foundations and Mandarin listening and speaking.

Characters, reading and writing: characters, words and context and foreign-language reading and writing.

Second-language work: second-language comprehension and second-language expression.

First-language work: first-language textual analysis and first-language composition.

Accuracy for every route: writing accuracy and feedback.

The learning guide puts these in a sensible study order.

How does it work, from enquiry to first lesson?

The steps are short, and you always know what comes next.

  1. Enquire on WhatsApp. Tell us you are interested in Chinese or Mandarin tuition. You can add your code, your year and what you find difficult.
  2. Teacher assignment. We assign an experienced teacher who suits your needs and schedule. The rate for the paid trial is confirmed to you before the lesson.
  3. Paid one-hour trial. This is a taught class, starting from RM80 at the assigned teacher’s confirmed rate. The trial agenda builder helps you decide what to bring and what to ask.
  4. Later arrangements. After the trial, fees, schedules and how lessons continue are agreed directly between you and the teacher. The post-trial reflection guide helps you judge whether the hour helped.

More detail is on the trial page and the how it works page, and what happens after the trial is explained separately.

What should you bring to the trial?

A trial is most useful when the teacher has something real to look at. Bring one or two of these:

  • A composition or paragraph you wrote, marked or unmarked.
  • A reading question you answered and cannot explain.
  • A speaking topic you find hard to develop, if you are on the Mandarin route.
  • Your entry code and exam year, so the lesson starts from the right place.

What does the service-wide experience look like?

More than 9,000 students have been helped through our service, across subjects. That figure is for the whole service and not for this subject alone. It shows that assigning teachers, running trials and arranging lessons is a well-practised process. What matters for you is the quality of the hour with a teacher, and the trial lets you judge that yourself.

Families also ask whether the assessed Chinese work will stay in Chinese, or be replaced by a translated version. It stays in Chinese. Passages and answers are handled in Chinese, and explanations in another language are only a support for understanding.

Where can you start before the trial?

You do not have to wait. Several parts of the site are free to use and are written to be useful alone.

When you are ready to ask about lessons, use the WhatsApp button on this page to enquire about Chinese and Mandarin tuition. Your message tells us your subject and the page you came from, and you can edit it before sending.

Questions people ask

Which code is this tuition for: 0509, 0523 or 0547?

All three are covered, and we keep them separate. First Language Chinese 0509, Second Language Chinese 0523 and Foreign Language Mandarin 0547 have different scope and task demands. Your entry decides which applies, so tell us the code on your entry statement when you enquire.

Will my Chinese work stay in Chinese?

Yes. The passages, your answers and your writing stay in Chinese, because that is what is assessed. We explain ideas in English, Malay or Chinese when it helps you understand, but we never replace your Chinese response with a translated version.

I speak Chinese at home. Do I still need tuition?

Possibly. Speaking Chinese at home does not show which code suits you, and it does not make a written answer clear by itself. Marks depend on reading the task, using evidence from the text and organising writing. Those habits can be practised one to one.

What happens in the paid one-hour trial?

It is a taught class with an experienced teacher assigned to you, not a consultation. You bring a real passage, answer or piece of writing. The rate is confirmed before the lesson and starts from RM80.

Will a teacher write my compositions for me?

No. The writing has to be yours. A teacher shows you how to plan, stay on the topic and check your own draft, then you write and revise it. That is the only way the skill transfers to the exam room.

How do fees and schedules work after the trial?

Ongoing fees, schedules and other arrangements are agreed directly between you and the teacher after the trial. We do not list packages on this page, because the right pattern depends on what the trial shows about your work and your timetable.
