To judge a resource, compare its contents page with the current syllabus for your exam year, line by line. The cover, the title and the price tell you very little about scope.
This lesson belongs to revision and transition decisions. It helps after you have decided how to share your hours in allocating time by actual gaps.
Why is a mismatch costly?
Revision hours are limited. A chapter that is outside your course costs hours and earns no marks. A missing topic costs marks and you may not notice until a past-style question exposes it.
The risk is higher with Co-ordinated Sciences because other science routes use similar words. Scope and integrated assessment stay specific to 0654, so confirm the details on the Cambridge page.
A five-point resource check
- Code and course name. Does the resource name 0654 and Co-ordinated Sciences, or another course?
- Exam years. Does it say which examination years it was written for? Compare with your own sitting.
- Topic coverage. Tick each syllabus topic that the resource explains.
- Extra material. Mark chapters the syllabus does not list.
- Question style. Check whether questions mix the sciences the way your course does.
Worked example
All figures are invented. A student finds a second-hand book, and the syllabus contents list has 30 topic lines. The student ticks the book’s coverage.
Covered topics: 24 of 30. Coverage = 24/30 = 0.8, so 80%.
Missing topics: 30 − 24 = 6. These need another source.
Extra chapters: the book has 36 chapters, and 8 sit outside the syllabus list. In-scope chapters = 36 − 8 = 28.
Check: 28 chapters in scope, but only 24 syllabus topics covered, because some topics span two chapters and some chapters repeat a topic. The student keeps 28 chapters, skips 8, and finds sources for the 6 gaps.
The mistake to watch for
A student sees “IGCSE Science” on a cover and assumes it matches 0654.
Mistaken reasoning: “It says IGCSE and Science, so it covers my course.”
The cover names a family of courses, not the one you are sitting.
The correction is to find the code and the exam years inside the book, then check the contents list against the current syllabus.
Check yourself
All data are invented.
1. A syllabus has 40 topic lines. A resource covers 32. What percentage is covered and how many are missing?
Show answer
32/40 = 0.8, so 80% covered. Missing = 40 − 32 = 8 topics.
2. A book has 50 chapters and 12 are outside the syllabus. How many chapters are in scope?
Show answer
50 − 12 = 38 chapters in scope.
3. A resource covers the right topics but names a different exam year range from yours. What should you do?
Show answer
Compare it with the syllabus for your own year on the Cambridge page. If the wording differs, trust the syllabus and mark the differences in the resource.
Where this leads next
Syllabus codes and years can change, so read why a future code or year needs another check next. Test yourself with the module practice set, and use the scientific investigation critic on any resource question about experiments.
A teacher can compare your notes with the syllabus in a session of online one-to-one Co-ordinated Sciences tuition.
