Listening for detail: original mixed practice with explanations

You have met each listening skill on its own, and now you want to see whether they hold together in one session.

This set has twelve short original clips. They cover numbers with units, corrections, sequences, conditions and keyword traps, in roughly that order, from easier to harder. All clips are written for this page and are not from any exam paper.

How should you use this set?

Ask someone to read each clip aloud once, in a natural voice. If you are alone, read it once, cover it and then write your answer. Do not re-read before answering, because the real task plays once or twice.

You can also use the original listening practice player for audio-style practice, and log errors in the mistake log and retest queue. Use the summary selection studio when you want to practise choosing only the relevant points from a text.

Questions

1. “The parcel costs seventeen ringgit to send and weighs nine kilograms.” Give the cost and the weight.

Show answer

RM17 and 9 kg. Seventeen has the stress on the end, so it is 17, not 70. Write the unit with each number.

2. “The pool is twenty-five metres long and two metres deep at the far end.” How long is the pool, and how deep is it at the far end?

Show answer

25 m long and 2 m deep. Both numbers carry the unit metres, and the question asks for two separate details.

3. “A drink costs three ringgit seventy-five.” How much is one drink?

Show answer

RM3.75. Three ringgit and seventy-five sen. Do not write RM375 or RM3.7.

4. “The film starts at a quarter past eight and lasts one hour forty minutes.” When does it start, and how long is it?

Show answer

8.15 and 1 hour 40 minutes. A quarter past means 15 minutes after the hour. The length is a duration, not a time of day.

5. “Meet at gate three at nine. Sorry, I mean gate four, at nine.” Where and when do you meet?

Show answer

Gate 4 at 9. Only the gate was corrected. The time, nine, was not changed.

6. “The fee is sixty ringgit. No, sorry, sixteen ringgit per student.” What is the fee?

Show answer

RM16. The correction replaces sixty with sixteen. Check the stress: sixTEEN ends strongly, SIXty starts strongly.

7. “Please get your bag checked first. Then wait in the lounge. Show your ticket at the door just before you board.” What do you do immediately before boarding?

Show answer

Show your ticket at the door. The order is bag check, lounge, ticket, board.

8. “Paint the fence, but only after you have washed it. Wait a day before adding the second coat.” Put the four actions in order: paint the first coat, wash the fence, add the second coat, wait a day.

Show answer

Wash the fence, paint the first coat, wait a day, add the second coat. Only after reverses the mention order of washing and painting, and before adding places the waiting ahead of the second coat.

9. “Students can use the lab after school… as long as a teacher is present.” Can a student use the lab alone?

Show answer

No. The permission is given only when a teacher is present. The phrase as long as introduces the condition after the pause.

10. “The discount is ten percent for everyone. Members get fifteen percent, provided they show their card.” A member forgets the card. What discount do they get?

Show answer

Ten percent. The fifteen percent depends on showing the card. Without it, the member receives the discount everyone gets.

11. “I thought I would take the nine forty train, but that one is cancelled, so I will take the ten forty instead.” Which train will the speaker take?

Show answer

The 10.40 train. The nine forty was mentioned, but it was cancelled. The speaker says instead.

12. “The lost bag was not the blue one with the red tag. It was the black one.” What colour was the lost bag?

Show answer

Black. Blue with a red tag was the rejected option, and red is the colour of the tag, not the bag.
