Images, layout and styles: mixed practice

Practice feels different when every question mixes a calculation with a decision you must explain.

These ten original questions run from easy to harder. They cover aspect ratio, cropping, styles, grids and formats from the module guide.

All images and documents are invented. Write your own answer first, then open the working.

1. An image is 1200 × 900 pixels. It must be 600 pixels wide. What height keeps its proportions?

Show answer

Scale factor = 600 ÷ 1200 = 0.5. Height = 900 × 0.5 = 450.

2. An image is 800 × 600. Someone sets it to 800 × 400. Describe the effect.

Show answer

The width is unchanged but the height is scaled by 400 ÷ 600 = 2/3. The image is squashed vertically and looks wide and flat.

3. A 2400 × 1600 image is reduced to 25% of its size. Give the new size.

Show answer

2400 × 0.25 = 600 and 1600 × 0.25 = 400. New size: 600 × 400.

4. Give the difference between cropping and resizing.

Show answer

Resizing scales the whole image and keeps all content. Cropping removes edges and loses content but does not change the shape of what remains.

5. A 1500 × 1000 image must become a square. Describe the crop and the size before any resizing.

Show answer

Keep the shorter side, 1000. Crop the width from 1500 to 1000, removing 500 in total. The cropped area is 1000 × 1000.

6. A 1600 × 900 image is cropped to a 4 : 3 shape keeping the full height, then resized to 480 pixels high. What is the final size?

Show answer

Height 900, so cropped width = 900 × 4/3 = 1200. Scale factor = 480 ÷ 900 = 8/15. Width = 1200 × 8/15 = 640. Final size: 640 × 480. Check: 640 ÷ 480 = 4 ÷ 3.

7. A report has 10 headings using one style. The client asks for a different colour. How many edits are needed, and why?

Show answer

One edit, to the style. Every heading using the style updates automatically.

8. A heading uses the correct style name but looks smaller than the others. Suggest the cause and the fix.

Show answer

Direct manual formatting has probably overridden the style. Clear the manual formatting and reapply the style.

9. A page is 210 mm wide with 15 mm margins each side. It has 3 columns with 9 mm gutters. Find the column width and the width of an object spanning 2 columns.

Show answer

Usable width = 210 − 30 = 180. Gutters: 2 × 9 = 18. Column = (180 − 18) ÷ 3 = 162 ÷ 3 = 54 mm. Two columns plus the gutter between = 2 × 54 + 9 = 117 mm. Check: 3 × 54 + 18 = 180.

10. A 640 × 480 image uses 3 bytes per pixel when uncompressed. Calculate its size, then say which format suits a photograph on a web page and why.

Show answer

Pixels = 640 × 480 = 307,200. Size = 307,200 × 3 = 921,600 bytes. JPEG suits a photograph because lossy compression greatly reduces the file for a small loss of detail, so the page loads faster.
