These ten original questions run from easy to harder. They cover page structure, stylesheets, relative links, image sizes, alt text and tables from the module guide.
All files, names and pages are invented. Write your own answer first, then open the working.
1. Which two elements form the main parts of an HTML page, directly inside html?
Show answer
head (information about the page, including the title) and body (the content shown to the reader).
2. A page has <h1>Library</h1>, then <h4>Opening hours</h4>, then <h2>Contact</h2>. Describe the structure fault and the fix.
Show answer
The page jumps from h1 to h4 because h4 looks smaller. Opening hours is a section under the main heading, so it should be h2. Contact is also a section, so it stays h2. Control the size in the stylesheet.
3. Write the link from index.html to pages/menu.html.
Show answer
<a href="pages/menu.html">Menu</a>. The menu page is in the folder pages, below the home page, so the path goes down with no ../.
4. Write the link from pages/menu.html back to index.html.
Show answer
<a href="../index.html">Home</a>. The page is inside pages, so ../ climbs one level to the folder containing index.html.
5. cafe.jpg is 1500 × 1000 pixels and must be 600 pixels wide on the page. What height keeps its proportions?
Show answer
Scale factor = 600 ÷ 1500 = 0.4. Height = 1000 × 0.4 = 400. Check: 600 ÷ 400 = 1.5 and 1500 ÷ 1000 = 1.5.
6. For a photo of a street food stall at night, choose the most suitable alt text: (a) stall.jpg, (b) Photo, (c) Street food stall lit by lanterns at night.
Show answer
(c). It describes what the picture shows. Option (a) repeats the file name and (b) says nothing useful.
7. Find the fault: h2 { color: blue font-size: 18px; }
Show answer
A semicolon is missing after blue, so the second declaration is not read properly. Correct: h2 { color: blue; font-size: 18px; }
8. Three pages in the main folder and one in pages must share style.css, which is in the main folder. Write the link line for the page in pages, and say how many files change if the heading colour changes.
Show answer
<link rel="stylesheet" href="../style.css"> inside head. Changing the heading colour needs one edit, in style.css, because all four pages share it.
9. A student uses a table to place a menu on the left and the text on the right of a page. Explain what is wrong and suggest the better method.
Show answer
A table should show rows and columns of related data, not position a whole page. Layout and positioning belong in the stylesheet, which also keeps the page meaningful for screen readers.
10. Replace <center><font color="green">Open today</font></center> with a modern version, with the CSS.
Show answer
HTML: <p class="open">Open today</p>
CSS:
.open {
text-align: center;
color: green;
}
The center and font tags are obsolete. Appearance moves into the stylesheet.
