Check the science qualification, not just the name

Two science courses can both be called combined or integrated science, yet they are not the same qualification.

Combined Science 0653 and Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 are different Cambridge IGCSE qualifications. A school might say “we do combined science” and mean either one, so the name on a timetable is not proof. The four-digit code on your entry is.

We are a tuition team, not an exam centre. Your exam centre enters you and holds your entry details. This page explains who is responsible for what, and how to check your own qualification.

Who is responsible for what?

  • Cambridge publishes the syllabus, scope and assessment information for each code.
  • Your school or exam centre decides which science qualification you take and makes the entry.
  • You or your parent confirm the code on the statement of entry.
  • Your teacher here teaches the scope of the code you confirm.

Why does this matter for revision?

A combined-science course draws on biology, chemistry and physics, but the amount and the way it is assessed belong to its own syllabus. According to our subject notes, Combined Science 0653 is a single-award course and Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is the double-award route.

If you revise for one while entered for the other, you may study content that is not assessed, or miss content that is. The fix is simple: read the syllabus for the code you are actually entered for.

What should you check, and where?

  1. Read the code on your statement of entry. See how to check your statement of entry.
  2. Open the Cambridge subject page for that code from the links below this article and confirm that the code and name match.
  3. Open the syllabus and check the years cover your exam session.
  4. Read the assessment section for what is examined and how, including any practical element or alternative to practical. See practical and coursework route checks.
  5. Write down the code, any route and your exam year.

The syllabus version comparison viewer is a checking aid for comparing syllabus years. It never treats two similar names as if they were the same qualification.

A short worked example

A Form 4 student’s school report says “Science (Combined)”. His parent is not sure whether that means 0653 or 0654. The parent asks the school office in writing: “Which Cambridge code is my son entered for?”

The office replies with the code. The parent opens the Cambridge page for that code, checks that the syllabus years cover the exam year, and then contacts us with three facts: code, route and exam year. The teacher scopes the lessons to that syllabus and does not add separate-science depth that the course does not list.

What if the school is unsure?

Ask the exam officer or exam centre, and keep the reply. Private candidates should ask the centre that accepts their entry; see questions to ask a private-candidate centre. Until you know, practise skills common to every science route: reading data, units, equations and explaining cause and effect in a sentence.

How does tuition fit in?

Confirming the qualification is for your centre and Cambridge. Explaining the science is for us.

See our Combined Science tuition and Co-ordinated Sciences tuition pages, and read how the paid trial works. The full split of duties is in tuition versus exam registration.

Questions people ask

Is Combined Science the same as Co-ordinated Sciences?

No. Cambridge lists Combined Science 0653 and Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as separate qualifications. Our subject notes describe 0653 as a single award and 0654 as the double award. Read each syllabus on the Cambridge pages to see the scope and assessment for your exam year.

Who decides which science route I take?

Your school or exam centre decides which qualifications it offers and enters you for. Cambridge publishes what each one contains. Your centre handles entry, dates and deadlines, so confirm them with your centre.

Can I use separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics notes?

Some ideas overlap, so they can help as background. But the scope of a combined course is set by its own syllabus, so check what is listed there before spending time on extra detail. A teacher can help you decide what is in scope for your code.

What should I tell a teacher when I enquire?

Tell us the exact code, the route if there is one, and your exam year. Please do not send documents from your school. The code is enough for us to scope the lessons.

Your next step

When the code on your entry is confirmed, a teacher can scope your lessons to that exact science route, beginning with a paid one-hour trial.

Paid one-hour trial at your assigned teacher’s confirmed rate, starting from RM80. Other fees, schedules and ongoing arrangements are confirmed directly with your teacher after the trial class.
