A mock review becomes a plan when you pick two or three skills, give each a short session, and set a retest with a fresh question. Anything more than that is a wish list.
You can keep the list, next actions and repeat dates in the mistake log and retest queue. If you have not yet sorted your marks, start with analysing a mock by skill.
How do I choose what goes in?
Take your sorted list of errors and rank them by two questions:
- How many marks did this cost?
- Will a repair also help other topics?
Pick the first two or three on the ranked list, and let the rest wait.
What does a small plan contain?
For each skill:
- What to practise (one sentence),
- One worked example to study first,
- A short practice set without notes,
- A retest date with a fresh question.
Worked example
After her mock, Sara has three focus skills.
| Skill | Cause | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Sign handling in algebra | Careless slip | Two 20-minute sessions; 6 questions each |
| Reading graphs in context | Method gap | Study one example, then one 25-minute session |
| Finishing on time | Pacing | One timed 20-minute set |
Her week:
| Day | Session | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Sign handling | 20 |
| Tuesday | Graphs: study example and practise | 25 |
| Thursday | Sign handling, second set | 20 |
| Saturday | Timed set | 20 |
Total: 20 + 25 + 20 + 20 = 85 minutes, across four days. That fits into a normal school week.
Retests. On the following Wednesday she does one fresh sign-handling question and one fresh graph question, without notes. If both go well, she removes them from the list. If one fails, it moves to the next week.
The plausible mistake. Sara’s first draft had eight skills and 10 hours. By Wednesday she had done none. A plan that does not fit into the week is not a plan. The fix is to cut to three skills and to book the sessions on specific days.
How do I know the plan is working?
The retest answers that. A skill is repaired when a fresh question, done later, without notes goes well. If it does not, change the approach: re-read the explanation, try a different worked example, or ask a teacher.
Self-check
- A student plans sessions of 30, 25, 30 and 20 minutes. What is the total?
Show answer
30 + 25 + 30 + 20 = 105 minutes. - Why is redoing the same mock question the next day a weak retest?
Show answer
You may just remember the answer. A fresh question on the same skill, a few days later, tests the skill.
When might one-to-one tuition be worth considering?
It may help when the review list is long, when a skill keeps failing its retest, or when you are not sure which items deserve the first week. A teacher can rank the list with you and stay with the method gaps that need teaching.
