A focal detail is the one thing in a scene that you slow down and describe closely, so the reader sees it and feels what it means. Descriptive writing in composition is judged on precision and effect, not on how many things you mention.
This lesson sits in first-language composition and pairs naturally with planning a narrative viewpoint, because the narrator decides what is noticed.
How do you build a paragraph around one detail?
- Pick the detail that holds the strongest feeling or memory.
- Look at it with more than one sense: shape, colour, sound, smell, touch.
- Add one precise comparison or one small action that the detail causes.
- End on what it means to the narrator, in a short plain sentence.
- Cut or shrink everything else in the scene.
Worked example
Task: describe your grandmother’s kitchen. The kitchen and the family are invented.
Step 1, brainstorm: walls, window, table, cat, calendar, an old aluminium pot on the stove.
Step 2, choose: the pot. It connects to soup, to grandmother, and to many afternoons.
Step 3, sense notes: the paint chipped around the rim; the lid that jumps; steam smelling of ginger and red dates.
Step 4, write:
外婆的厨房很小,最显眼的是灶台上那口铝锅。锅沿掉了一圈漆,露出灰白的铝,像笑起来缺了牙的嘴。
每次我放学回来,锅盖总在轻轻跳动,白气从缝里挤出来,带着姜和红枣的甜味。外婆说,这口锅比我爸爸的年纪还大。
The paragraph names the room in one clause, then spends its words on the pot. The last sentence gives the pot a history, which tells the reader what it means.
The mistake to watch for
The usual slip is to give every object the same weight.
Mistaken version: 厨房里有一张桌子,一扇窗,一只猫,一本日历,还有一口锅。桌子是木头做的,窗户很大,猫很可爱。
Everything is mentioned and nothing is seen. The adjectives (很大, 很可爱) are generic.
Correction: keep one item and replace the generic adjectives with an exact observation. Mention the other items only if they touch the pot, for example 猫蹲在灶台边,等着锅里飘出来的香味.

1. Pick the focal detail from this list for a scene at a night market, and say why: lanterns, noise, a seller’s burnt thumb, the price board.
Show answer
The seller’s burnt thumb. It is specific, it tells you about the person’s work, and it can lead to a feeling. The others are general scenery.
2. Replace the vague phrase 他的手很旧 with a more exact observation.
Show answer
Example: 他的手背上布满细纹,指节粗大,捏着秤砣时微微发抖. Any version with a visible, specific detail works.
3. Write a closing sentence for the pot paragraph that links the pot to the narrator’s feeling.

Example: 后来我才明白,我想念的不只是汤,还有锅盖跳动时那份安心。

Detail works inside an argument too, as an example that supports a reason. Continue with building an argument from supported reasons. When you want a teacher to look at your paragraph, see online one-to-one Chinese tuition.
