To organise an event in Mandarin, give each step a time word and link the steps with a sequence word: 先 (xiān, first), 然后 (ránhòu, then), 最后 (zuìhòu, finally). Time words go before the verb. This appears in planning tasks, diary entries and listening questions about schedules.
This is the third lesson in Mandarin communication foundations. It uses the question frames from asking for a practical detail.
How do you build a time-ordered plan?
Use a simple three-layer pattern.
- Day or date: 星期六 (xīngqīliù, Saturday), 下个星期 (xià ge xīngqī, next week), 明天 (míngtiān, tomorrow).
- Clock time: 早上八点 (zǎoshang bā diǎn, 8 am), 中午十二点半 (zhōngwǔ shí’èr diǎn bàn, 12:30 pm), 下午三点 (xiàwǔ sān diǎn, 3 pm).
- Sequence link: 先……然后……最后…… to join the steps.
Put the day first, then the clock time, then the person and action: 星期六早上八点我们在学校集合 (xīngqīliù zǎoshang bā diǎn wǒmen zài xuéxiào jíhé, on Saturday at 8 am we gather at school).
Worked example
The people and the event are invented. A class plans a beach clean-up.
Task: tell a classmate the plan in four sentences.
- 下个星期六早上八点,我们在学校门口集合。 (Xià ge xīngqīliù zǎoshang bā diǎn, wǒmen zài xuéxiào ménkǒu jíhé.) Next Saturday at 8 am, we meet at the school gate.
- 先坐巴士去海边。 (Xiān zuò bāshì qù hǎibiān.) First we take the bus to the beach.
- 然后我们捡垃圾,一直到十一点。 (Ránhòu wǒmen jiǎn lājī, yìzhí dào shíyī diǎn.) Then we pick up rubbish until 11 o’clock.
- 最后在餐厅一起吃午饭。 (Zuìhòu zài cāntīng yìqǐ chī wǔfàn.) Finally we eat lunch together at a restaurant.
Each time word comes before its verb, and 先, 然后 and 最后 show the order without extra grammar.
The mistake to watch for
A common slip is to put the time at the end, as English does.
Mistaken sentence: 我们集合在学校门口星期六。
It follows the English “we gather at the school gate on Saturday”.
The correction is 星期六我们在学校门口集合。 The time goes first, then the place, then the verb. If you place the time after the verb, a listener may not understand when the event happens.
A second slip is to use 然后 on every sentence. Vary it with 接着 (jiēzhe, next) or 之后 (zhīhòu, afterwards), and keep 然后 for when the order truly matters.

1. Put in Mandarin: “On Friday at 3 pm we have a meeting.”
Show answer
星期五下午三点我们开会。 (Xīngqīwǔ xiàwǔ sān diǎn wǒmen kāihuì.) Day, then clock time, then subject and verb.
2. Correct this: 我去图书馆明天早上。
Show answer
明天早上我去图书馆。 (Míngtiān zǎoshang wǒ qù túshūguǎn.) The time phrase moves to the front.
3. Link these with 先, 然后, 最后: 做作业, 打球, 洗澡 (shower).
Show answer
One possible answer: 我先做作业,然后打球,最后洗澡。 (Wǒ xiān zuò zuòyè, ránhòu dǎqiú, zuìhòu xǐzǎo.) Any order that makes sense is correct, as long as the three links are used.
Where this leads next
Next, learn what to do when a word fails in keeping a short exchange going. The mistake log and retest queue can store the word order slips you want to retest.
Planning tasks reward fast, accurate speech. A teacher in online one-to-one Chinese tuition can run timed plan conversations and correct each slip as it happens.
