Second-language comprehension: a study route

You can read each sentence on its own, yet a question about the writer's view still leaves you unsure where the answer is.

Second-language comprehension is the skill of reading a Chinese passage and answering questions with evidence from the text. It rewards a reader who knows where an answer lives, not only one who knows many words. This module sits in the Chinese and Mandarin learning guide and follows Foreign-language reading and writing.

All Chinese passages and model answers here stay in Simplified Chinese, with pinyin where it helps. Every passage, writer and character is invented and labelled as such.

What do you need before starting?

You need to read short paragraphs on familiar topics: school, family, hobbies, travel and daily routines. Roughly a thousand common characters will carry you through these lessons. If a character blocks you, look it up and keep going, because the aim is the method.

What does a worked example look like?

This passage is invented. 小明以前不喜欢跑步。后来,他加入了学校的跑步队,现在每天早上都去练习。

Question: how did Xiaoming’s feeling about running change? The signal word 以前 (yǐqián, before) marks the old view: he disliked running. 后来 (hòulái, later) and 现在 (xiànzài, now) mark the new one: he practises every morning.

A full answer is: 他以前不喜欢跑步,现在每天练习,说明他的看法变了。Two time words, two views, one sentence that links them.

In what order should you study the lessons?

  1. Track a viewpoint across a passage: first learn how a writer’s view moves from the start to the end.
  2. Identify support for a main idea: then see which sentences prove the idea and which only decorate it.
  3. Interpret a phrase in context: next deal with idioms and fixed phrases that cannot be read word by word.
  4. Distinguish a summary point from an example: this builds the selection skill used in summaries.
  5. Explain an inference using evidence: finish with the hardest skill, which uses all the others.

What are the common traps?

The first trap is answering from the question stem or from general knowledge. A correct sentence in Chinese can still earn nothing if it is not in the passage.

The second is copying a long stretch of text. Choose the part that answers the question and keep it short.

The third is stopping at the first view. Writers often change their minds, so check the ending before you answer.

How should you use the practice set?

Do the mixed practice set after at least three lessons. Cover the answer, write your own, then compare the evidence you chose, not only the final wording.

The tools summary selection and paraphrase studio and writing revision compare view help you check selected points and revised answers. To work through your own written answers with a teacher, our team offers online one-to-one Chinese tuition.

Questions people ask

Which Chinese qualification does this module serve?

It suits learners preparing for Cambridge IGCSE Chinese as a Second Language (0523), and the habits help any reader of Chinese. Cambridge treats 0509, 0523 and 0547 as different qualifications, so check your own code and the current question styles on the Cambridge subject page before relying on any task format described here.

Must I answer in Chinese characters?

The practice answers on these pages are written in Simplified Chinese, with pinyin beside new words while you learn. For the language, script and length your own papers expect, read the current syllabus for your code and ask your school or exam centre.

How long should a passage take me?

Start slowly and read each short passage twice: once for the whole message, once for the answer. Speed comes after the method is automatic. Time yourself only when you can find evidence without guessing.
