Separate examination preparation from practical-centre provision

Many students are unsure who is responsible for practical work, and that doubt can sit in the background of every investigation question.

Examination preparation means practising the thinking and writing that investigation questions need. Practical-centre provision means the equipment, supervision, entry and any assessed practical arrangements your school or exam centre manages. They are different jobs, and keeping them separate removes a lot of confusion.

This lesson closes investigations and evidence. Check the current wording on the Cambridge Combined Science 0653 page for your exam year.

What can be practised on paper?

Skills that appear in written investigation questions can be rehearsed anywhere: naming controlled conditions, suggesting a safe measurement improvement, explaining systematic error, and weighing alternative conclusions.

Worked example

Sort these five statements into “exam preparation” (EP) or “centre provision” (CP).

  1. Writing a conclusion from a table of invented results.
  2. Providing laboratory equipment and supervision.
  3. Calculating a mean and percentage uncertainty.
  4. Registering the candidate and confirming entries.
  5. Deciding whether a result is precise or accurate.

Step 1, ask who does the action. If the student can do it with a pencil and a data table, it is EP. If it needs a school, a supervisor or an official process, it is CP.

Step 2, apply. Statements 1, 3 and 5 are EP. Statements 2 and 4 are CP.

Step 3, act. Practise 1, 3 and 5 with a teacher. Ask your centre about 2 and 4.

The mistake to watch for

Mistaken answer: “My tuition teacher will arrange my practical work and my exam entry.”

That mixes the two roles. Exam entry, practical arrangements and access requests go through the exam centre. The correction is to list what you need from the centre and ask them directly.

Check yourself

1. Which is exam preparation: drawing a results table, or booking laboratory time?

Show answer

Drawing a results table. Booking laboratory time is a centre matter.

2. Name one question to ask your centre about practical skills.

Show answer

For example: “Which components and practical-skills assessment will I sit this exam year?”

3. True or false: online tuition can issue an access arrangement.

Show answer

False. The exam centre applies to Cambridge for access arrangements.

Where this leads next

Put the whole module together in the investigations practice set, and use the mistake log to keep track of repeat errors.

If your preparation questions are clear but the writing is not, online one-to-one Combined Science tuition can focus on that.

Questions people ask

Does online tuition provide the practical sessions?

No. Online tuition can practise planning, tables, graphs, conclusions and evaluation on paper. Practical arrangements, equipment, supervision and any assessed practical component belong to your school or exam centre.

Where do I check how practical skills are assessed?

Read the Combined Science 0653 syllabus on the Cambridge website for your exam year, and ask your exam centre which components you will sit. Do not rely on a friend's route, as arrangements can differ.

Who handles access arrangements?

Your exam centre applies to Cambridge for access arrangements. A tuition teacher can help you prepare answers, but the application, entry and any adjustments are handled by the centre.

Your next step

If you want help turning investigation questions into clear written answers, a one-to-one teacher can work on exactly that, while your centre keeps its own role for practical arrangements.

Paid one-hour trial at your assigned teacher’s confirmed rate, starting from RM80. Other fees, schedules and ongoing arrangements are confirmed directly with your teacher after the trial class.

Tuition is arranged with a parent or guardian. Send them this page on WhatsApp and they can enquire for you.
