Explain a future study or work interest

You have an idea of what you might do later, but saying it in French sounds flat or muddled.

  6. Where does this lead next?

To explain a future interest in French, say what you want to do, say why, and add a step you will take. Plus tard, je voudrais devenir infirmière, parce que j’aime aider les gens is the core of a good answer.

This skill appears in speaking conversations about the future and in written messages about studies and work. It belongs to study, work and future interests, and it uses the school opinions from describing school preferences.

Which structures do I need?

PurposeStructureExample
A wishje voudrais / j’aimerais + infinitiveJe voudrais étudier la médecine.
A planje vais + infinitiveJe vais passer mes examens en juin.
A jobdevenir / être + job, no articleJe voudrais devenir ingénieur.

Two forms matter in the condition. After si, use the present, and put the future in the main clause. J’irai comes from aller, and j’étudierai comes from étudier.

How do I build the answer?

  1. State the interest. Plus tard, je voudrais…
  3. Add a step you will take. Après le lycée, je vais…
  4. Add a condition or a link to now.
  5. Check the verbs. Infinitive after voudrais and vais, and no article before a bare job title.

Worked example

Step 1, interest: je voudrais devenir infirmière has the infinitive and no article.

Step 2, reason: parce que j’aime aider les gens has a subject and a verb.

Step 3, step: je vais étudier is the near future, and the place is à l’université.

Step 4, condition: Si j’obtiens… j’irai… uses the present after si and the future in the main clause.

Step 5, check: the answer states a goal, a reason and a path, and each verb is accurate.

What mistake should I watch for?

The usual slips are an article before the job and a future tense after si.

The first sentence adds une to a bare job title, and the second puts the future after si.

The correction is Je voudrais être infirmière. Present after si, future in the other half.

Try these on paper, then open each answer.

1. Complete: Plus tard, je voudrais être ___ ingénieur.

Show answer

No word is needed. Plus tard, je voudrais être ingénieur. The job is named without an article.

Show answer

The near future is aller plus the infinitive: Cet été, je vais faire un stage dans une pharmacie.

3. Complete: Si je réussis mes examens, j’___ (aller) à l’université.

Show answer

The main clause takes the future of aller: Si je réussis mes examens, j’irai à l’université. The si clause stays in the present.

Where does this lead next?

With future plans in place, bring all four skills together in the integrated practice for this module. After that, try culture and international experiences, which reuses these structures.

Some students have clear plans and still cannot put them into French. Our teachers help with that in online one-to-one French tuition.

Questions people ask

Which tense should I use for future plans?

Use a mix. Je voudrais or j'aimerais plus an infinitive expresses a wish, aller plus an infinitive gives the near future for plans, and the simple future suits events further off. Check which form your task expects, and keep each verb accurate.

Do I need an article before a job title?

Not after être or devenir when you simply name the job. You say Je voudrais être infirmière, not une infirmière. An article returns when the job is described, as in C'est une infirmière très compétente.

How many reasons should I give for a future plan?

One clear reason is enough for a short answer, and two make a developed one. Link them to something real, such as a subject you enjoy, a skill you have or an experience you had. Always check the number of points in the task.
