Distinguish 0546 from 0696 by the actual entry

Two Malay codes look similar on a page, and it is easy to prepare for the wrong one.

  1. Why does the entry matter?
  2. How to confirm your route, step by step
  3. Worked example
  4. The mistake to watch for

  6. Where this leads next

Your route is the code on your actual entry, not a guess based on how you speak at home. Cambridge IGCSE Malay as a Foreign Language is 0546, and Cambridge IGCSE Malay as a First Language is 0696. They are separate qualifications, and the first step in any preparation is knowing which one you sit.

This lesson belongs to the Malay qualification routes module. Read the current syllabus for your code on the Cambridge subject page before you choose materials.

Why does the entry matter?

Each code has its own syllabus, so the skills tested and the way tasks are set are not interchangeable. A learner who practises the wrong route can work hard and still meet unfamiliar tasks on the day.

The entry is made by your school or exam centre. The centre is the authority on which code you are registered for.

How to confirm your route, step by step

  1. Find the code on your entry confirmation or ask your exam teacher to read it to you.
  2. Open the Cambridge page for that exact code and read its title.
  3. Download the syllabus and note the exam years it covers.
  4. Compare a sample task with what your class is practising.
  5. Write the code first in your notes so every worksheet is tagged.

Worked example

All people and texts here are invented. Hana speaks Malay at home with her grandparents but studies it as a school subject like a language. Her entry confirmation says 0546.

Hana opens the 0546 page, sees “Foreign Language” in the title, and tags her notebook “0546”. She then tests a practice sentence of the right level:

Saya tinggal di Ipoh bersama keluarga saya. Hujung minggu, kami makan di pasar malam.

Her teacher confirms this is the kind of everyday language the foreign-language route builds. A reflective essay on social change would belong to a different route, so Hana sets it aside.

The mistake to watch for

A student reasons: “I do well in SPM Bahasa Melayu, so I must be 0696.”

Mistaken reasoning: good SPM results mean my IGCSE code is 0696.

SPM is a separate Malaysian examination. It does not decide a Cambridge entry.

The correction is to read the code on the entry and use only that syllabus. If the entry looks wrong for you, ask the centre before the entry deadline.

Check yourself

All details are invented.

1. An entry slip reads 0696. Which syllabus page do you open?

Show answer

The Cambridge IGCSE Malay 0696 page, the First Language route. The code on the entry decides the page, not your home language.

2. Who is responsible for your registration?

Show answer

Your school or exam centre registers you with Cambridge. A tuition service does not make or change entries.

3. Is SPM BM proof of a Cambridge route?

Show answer

No. SPM Bahasa Melayu is a separate national examination. Only the Cambridge entry code shows your route.

Where this leads next

With the code settled, check the exam year before you pick any task guidance in checking the examination year. Use the Malay qualification routes practice set to test the idea, and the summary selection and paraphrase studio when you want original reading tasks. More on the code is in the 0546 guide and the 0696 guide.

If you want a teacher to check your route and prepare tasks for it, that is part of online one-to-one Malay tuition.

Questions people ask

Are 0546 and 0696 the same Malay subject?

No. 0546 is Cambridge IGCSE Malay as a Foreign Language and 0696 is Cambridge IGCSE Malay as a First Language. They are separate qualifications with their own syllabus documents, so tasks, expectations and preparation differ. Always read the syllabus for the code on your own entry before choosing materials.

Can I decide the route by how fluent I feel?

Fluency is a useful clue but not the deciding fact. The route is the code you are entered for through your school or exam centre. If you feel the code does not suit you, raise it with your centre early, because entries are handled by the centre and not by us or by this website.

Does SPM Bahasa Melayu tell me which code I take?

No. SPM Bahasa Melayu is a Malaysian national examination and is separate from Cambridge IGCSE Malay. Its task formats and marking are not the same as either Cambridge code, so do not use SPM conventions as proof of your IGCSE route.
