把细节与全文联系起来，是说明一个小小的选择为文章的主要意思、气氛或发展增添了什么。它汇集了精读与证据中之前的技能：找出细节、诠释它，再把它与更广的意义联系起来。
怎样把细节与整体联系起来？
用四个问题。
- 细节是什么？ 引用最短而有用的短语。
- 它本身显示了什么？ 写一句诠释。
- 文章还有哪里呼应了这一点？ 看开头、之前的习惯或对比。
- 这个联系增添了什么？ 说明整篇文章在表达什么，以及这个细节如何支持它。
最终答案的顺序是：细节、意义、联系、效果。
例题详解
请读下面这段原创短文。
Every Sunday, Grandfather Tan wound the kitchen clock, though the battery clock beside it kept better time. Amir had once offered to throw the old one out. Grandfather had only smiled and given the key another slow turn. Now, on the morning of the move, Amir found the old clock wrapped in newspaper on top of the boxes, ready to be carried into the new house first.
题目： Why does the writer end with the old clock on top of the boxes?
细节： “wrapped in newspaper on top of the boxes, ready to be carried into the new house first”。
本身的意义： 这座钟被小心对待，并且被优先处理。
与开头的联系： 文章开头，爷爷每个星期天都给它上发条，尽管旁边的电池钟更准，而且当有人提出扔掉它时，他只是笑了笑。习惯比准确更重要。

The writer ends with the clock “wrapped in newspaper on top of the boxes” to show that Grandfather’s care for it continues through the move. Earlier he keeps winding it though the battery clock is more accurate, so its place at the front of the boxes completes the pattern: for him, the old clock is about memory and routine, not telling the time.
要留意的错误
常见的错误是孤立地解释细节。
Weak answer: The clock is wrapped in newspaper, which shows it is being looked after carefully and will be the first thing to go to the new house.
这个答案是准确的，但只是把最后一句话换个说法重复了一遍。题目问的是作者为什么这样结尾，而答案从来没有回头看文章的其余部分。
改正的方法是加上联系：指出文章之前已经告诉了我们关于钟和爷爷的什么，再说明结尾如何印证它。如果把文章其余部分都删掉，你的答案依然成立，那它多半还没有联系起来。
