Mr Rahman checked his watch for the third time and set the tray of cakes down on the counter. Nobody from the committee had arrived, though the hall had been booked for seven. He straightened a paper tablecloth that was already straight.
What can you infer about how Mr Rahman is feeling?
线索: “checked his watch for the third time”;“Nobody from the committee had arrived”;“straightened a paper tablecloth that was already straight”。
Mr Rahman seems anxious. He checks his watch “for the third time”, which shows he is watching the clock, and he straightens a tablecloth “that was already straight”, which suggests he is fidgeting because he cannot relax.
Speculation: The committee forgot Mr Rahman because they do not like him, and he is upset that nobody respects him.
写上 “suggests he is anxious”,然后就停下来。
1. Is this an inference or speculation? “Mr Rahman baked the cakes himself.”
Show answer
Speculation.
2. Give one inference about the committee’s meeting and one clue.
Show answer
一个稳妥的答案:会议迟迟没有开始,因为 “Nobody from the committee had arrived, though the hall had been booked for seven”。
3. A student writes: “He is fidgeting, so he must have had a terrible day at work.” What is wrong?
Show answer
更稳妥的写法是:“His fidgeting suggests he is nervous about the meeting.”
