Some Cambridge IGCSE subjects have a counterpart that reports results on a 9 to 1 scale instead of letter grades. That counterpart carries its own code. The subject name can look the same while the code, and the requirements behind it, are different.
We are a tuition team, not an exam centre. We do not enter students and cannot confirm what is available at any centre. This page shows who decides, and how to check before you spend time revising.
Who is responsible for what?
- Cambridge defines every qualification, publishes its code, syllabus and assessment, and states how results are reported.
- Your school or exam centre decides which qualifications are offered and enters you.
- You or your parent confirm the code on your entry and tell your teacher.
- Your teacher here teaches to the code you confirm.
Why check at all?
It is easy to assume that a 9-1 subject is the letter-grade subject with a new scale. Our subject notes treat each related 9-1 code as needing its own verified requirements and availability. The content, papers or options may differ, and we do not claim to know how, because Cambridge holds the answer.
Checking takes a few minutes and protects weeks of revision.
What should you check, and where?
- Take the four-digit code from your statement of entry; see checking your statement of entry.
- Look it up in the Cambridge IGCSE catalogue. Confirm the full title, not just the subject name.
- Open the syllabus and check that its years include your exam year.
- Read the assessment section for papers, options and anything you may use in the exam. See also finding the correct syllabus.
- Ask your centre whether that code is the one you are entered for and how results will be reported. See grading and thresholds.
- Write down the code and exam year for your teacher.
The syllabus and exam-year navigator gives a structured checklist for this. When it does not recognise a combination it lists what remains to be checked, and does not guess.
A short worked example
A parent notices two similar-looking listings for the same subject in a revision book. She is unsure which applies to her daughter. She asks the school: “Please confirm the exact Cambridge code for my daughter’s entry.”
She then looks that code up in the catalogue, confirms the syllabus years and the title, and tells us the code and year. She does not ask us whether the other version “counts”. That is a question for the centre and Cambridge.
What if your code is not on our site?
Our subject pages list particular codes.
If yours is not listed, say so when you enquire. A teacher can tell you honestly whether they are able to teach it, and you can continue to read the official syllabus yourself. See the subjects overview.
How does tuition fit in?
Confirming and entering the qualification belongs to your centre and Cambridge. Teaching belongs to us. Read how the paid trial works and see tuition versus exam registration for the full split of responsibilities.
