A private candidate pays the exam centre, and the centre sets its own fees. Cambridge states that centres may ask you to reimburse the exam fee and to pay a further fee for supervision and any other costs they incur.
This page explains what makes up the cost so you can compare quotes properly. Fees differ between centres and change by series, so ask your centre.
Who sets which cost?
The cost has two layers. Cambridge charges the centre for entering candidates, and the centre charges you. The centre decides what it adds on top.
| Cost part | Set by | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Entry fees for your subjects | The centre, which passes on Cambridge’s entry fees | Is the entry fee per subject or per paper? |
| Supervision | The centre | Is supervision a separate fee, and for how many papers? |
| Practical, oral or coursework arrangements | The centre | Can this be arranged, and what does it cost? |
| Administration or registration charge | The centre | Is there a fixed charge on top of the entry fees? |
| Late entry | The centre, within Cambridge’s deadlines | What is the cut-off, and what changes after it? |
| Results services | Cambridge and the centre | What does an enquiry about results cost through the centre? |
Why do two centres quote differently?
Centres have different overheads, different numbers of candidates and different supervision arrangements. One centre may bundle several charges into a single figure, while another lists them separately.
That is why a lower headline fee does not always mean a lower total. Ask for the total for your exact subjects and series, in writing.
How can you compare quotes like for like?
Make a simple table with one row per centre and the same columns for each.
- Subjects and series you plan to enter.
- Total payable, in ringgit, and the date it is due.
- What the total includes: entry, supervision, administration.
- What is extra: late entry, practical arrangements, replacement documents.
- What happens if you withdraw or miss an exam.
Use the same list for every centre. If a centre cannot say what its total covers, ask again before you pay. Our centre questions page has the wider checklist.
What about costs outside the exam?
Exam fees are only one part of the budget. Preparation, books or resources, travel to the venue and any retake are separate decisions.
If you are comparing preparation costs, read what affects the cost of IGCSE tuition. The two budgets are independent, because tuition and exam registration are handled by different parties, as explained in tuition versus exam registration.
