A private candidate registers through an exam centre that accepts private candidates, never directly with Cambridge. The centre makes the entries, you pay the centre, and the centre handles most of what happens afterwards.
This page gives the order of the steps. Dates, prices and exact rules vary by centre, so each step tells you what to confirm and with whom.
What is a private candidate?
Cambridge describes private candidates as individuals who want to take Cambridge exams but do not attend a registered centre. In Malaysia, that includes students studying IGCSE at home, switching from another system or retaking a subject.
Our guide to studying IGCSE outside school covers the planning side. This page covers the registration side.
What are the steps?
- Choose the subjects and check that they are open to private candidates. Cambridge’s subject pages show whether a syllabus is available. Some are not.
- Check you can meet every assessment. You must be able to complete the full requirements of each assessment you enter. Subjects with practical, oral or coursework parts need extra thought, see practical and coursework route checks.
- Find a centre that accepts private candidates. Not every centre does. Read how to find a Cambridge exam centre.
- Contact the centre and ask your questions. Use the private-candidate centre questions as a checklist.
- Register and pay through the centre. The centre enters you with Cambridge and may charge fees, including supervision. See the cost structure.
- Check your entry statement. Cambridge lists this as the candidate’s job. Use the statement of entry checklist.
- Take valid ID to each exam. Centres verify identity before exams.
- Collect results through the centre. Results enquiries and certificates also go through the centre. See exam series and results timing.
Who is responsible for what?

| Make entries and pay Cambridge fees | No | Yes | Receives entries |
| Pay the centre | Yes | Sets its fees | Does not set them |
| Issue timetable and request access arrangements | Raise needs early | Yes | Decides on requests |
| Check entry statement | Yes | Provides it | No |
| Results, enquiries, certificates | Collect | Processes | Issues results |
What does registration not include?
Registration gives you a place in the exam. It does not include teaching, a study plan or practice with the topics.
That separation is useful. You can choose the exam centre by location, price and availability, and choose preparation separately. Our page on arranging study support separately from examination entry and the note on tuition versus exam registration explain the split.
What can you do this week?
Write down the subjects and the series you hope to sit. Then shortlist two or three centres and ask each the same questions, so the answers compare cleanly.
The private-candidate readiness checklist helps you keep track. When you know the subjects, you can start preparing for them. Our service is online one-to-one Cambridge IGCSE tuition anywhere in Malaysia, and the paid one-hour trial starts from RM80 at the assigned teacher’s confirmed rate.
