0511 is the code for Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language, the count-in speaking route. It identifies the qualification on entry forms, syllabus documents and past papers, and it is the first thing to confirm before you choose what to revise.
This page states only what is stable and tells you where to check the rest. The official source is always the Cambridge subject page linked below.
What does the code tell you?
The code names the qualification, not the exam year. The same code appears year after year, and Cambridge issues a syllabus document that covers a run of exam years.
Two things follow. First, the code alone is not enough to pick a syllabus, so you also need your exam year. Second, a document for a different run of years, or for a different code, may describe wording or arrangements that differ from your own.
How do I confirm my syllabus in five steps?
- Ask your school or exam centre for your entry code and exam year.
- Open the Cambridge 0511 subject page and find the syllabus document listed for that year.
- Record the document name and year at the start of your revision file.
- Use the syllabus navigator to write down what you confirmed and what is still unresolved.
- Compare versions with the syllabus version viewer if you are using older notes or textbooks.
What should I check with my exam centre?
Your exam centre handles things that we and this site cannot. Ask them:
- Which exam series are you entered for? Do not assume May/June or October/November.
- How will the speaking part be arranged for your entry?
- What are the registration and entry deadlines?
- Are any access arrangements relevant to your entry?
Private candidates also deal with the centre and Cambridge directly. Follow the Cambridge private candidate guidance and confirm details with the centre you plan to use.
Is 0511 the same as 0510?
No. 0511 is the count-in oral route and 0510 is the oral endorsement route, and they carry separate codes. Many language skills overlap, but anything about how speaking is treated must come from the page for your own code.
Read the 0510 code guide and the speaking route comparison if your school materials mention both.
A short example of using the code
A student has a friend’s notes that say “speaking is reported separately” and a textbook with “IGCSE ESL” on the cover. The student’s entry form says 0511.
The steps: the student opens the 0511 subject page, finds the document for their exam year, writes its name at the start of the file, and marks the friend’s speaking notes “check route first” because the friend may be entered for 0510. The textbook’s reading and writing chapters stay in the plan, since they practise language skills. The friend’s speaking notes wait until the student has checked them against the 0511 page.
The habit matters more than the answer: the code decides what goes into the revision plan.
What do we not state here?
Take paper numbers, durations, weightings and grade thresholds from the current Cambridge syllabus for your exam year. Those belong to Cambridge and can change between syllabus versions. The Cambridge subject page and the syllabus document are the place to read them.
Where to go next
Build a plan with the study route guide, read how the route works in the assessment guide and see the whole subject in the English as a Second Language learning guide. The module on 0510 and 0511 route awareness walks through the checks step by step.
Once your code and year are confirmed, online one-to-one English as a Second Language tuition can start from the right syllabus instead of a guess.
