The assessment route that applies to you is decided by two things: the code you are entered for and the exam year. This page tells you what we can say with confidence, and exactly what to check with Cambridge and your exam centre for the rest.
What is the difference between 0510 and 0511?
Both are Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language qualifications built around practical communication. The difference we can state is how speaking is treated:
| 0510 | 0511 | |
|---|---|---|
| Name on the Cambridge site | English as a Second Language (oral endorsement) | English as a Second Language (count-in oral) |
| Speaking test | Reported as an endorsement, separate from the main grade | Counts towards the grade |
Because of this, the two routes should be kept apart in your planning. Do not treat a mark or grade from one as if it were the other, and do not borrow a friend’s plan if their code is different.
What do we leave for you to check?
Components, weightings, timings, question formats, speaking test arrangements and grade information all change between exam years. We do not list them, because a wrong detail could misdirect your whole plan. Check these items on the Cambridge page and syllabus document for your code and year:
- The exact code on your entry confirmation.
- The exam year you are sitting, which decides the syllabus version.
- The components and what each one assesses.
- How the speaking test is treated and scheduled.
- Any notices on the subject page, such as a syllabus transition.
The 0510 syllabus documents are published for ranges of exam years, for example 2024 to 2026 and 2027 to 2029, so the year matters. Confirm the right range for your own entry.
Worked example: checking a year
Imran is in Form 4 and his school tells him he is entered for 0510, sitting in a later year than his older cousin did.
He uses the syllabus and exam-year navigator as a checklist. He writes: “Code 0510. Year: the one on my school’s entry list. Syllabus document: the range that includes that year.”
He downloads that document, not the one his cousin used, and notes that the speaking test is an endorsement under 0510. He then asks his exam centre who arranges the speaking test and when, since the centre decides the arrangements.
Notice what he did not do: he did not rely on a forum post, and he did not assume the cousin’s paper layout still applied.
The mistake to watch for
Using materials from the wrong year or code. Past explanations may describe an older layout. Always look for the code and the year in any guide, including ours, and compare it with your entry.
Who is responsible for what?
- Your school or exam centre: registration, entry, speaking test arrangements, access arrangements and sitting the exam.
- Cambridge: the syllabus, exam papers, marking and results.
- You: confirming your code and year, and preparing the skills.
- Us: teaching and practice, not entries or arrangements.
How does this connect to study?
Once the route is confirmed, use the 0510 and 0511 route awareness module to check what you have confirmed. The code pages 0510 and 0511 list further points to check. Then build a plan with the study route guide.
If you want help preparing for the skills your route asks for, see online one-to-one English as a Second Language tuition, and the subject learning guide for the topic map.
