0654 is the code for Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences, the double-award route. It identifies the qualification on entry forms, syllabus documents and past papers, and it is the first thing to confirm before you choose what to revise.
This page states only what is stable and tells you where to check the rest. The official source is the Cambridge subject page linked below.
What does the code tell you?
The code names the qualification, not the exam year. Cambridge publishes syllabus documents for runs of exam years.
So the code alone is not enough. You also need your exam year.
Keep the scope distinct from Combined Science and from the separate sciences. The codes exist to help you do that.
How do I confirm my syllabus in five steps?
- Ask your school or exam centre for your entry code and exam year, in writing.
- Open the Cambridge 0654 subject page and find the syllabus document that lists your year.
- Record the document name and year at the start of your revision file.
- Use the syllabus navigator to note what is confirmed and what is still open.
- Compare versions with the syllabus version viewer if you are using older notes or textbooks.
What should I check in the specification?
Read these in the document for your own exam year before you label anything as required:
- The topic list for each of the three sciences.
- The assessment route: which papers apply to your entry and what each assesses.
- Practical skills: how they are assessed and what your centre arranges.
Write each answer beside the page or section where you found it. Our assessment guide shows how to read the route once you have it.
What should I check with my exam centre?
Your exam centre handles what this site cannot. Ask:
- Which exam series are you entered for? Do not assume May/June or October/November.
- What are the registration and entry deadlines?
- Which tier or route applies, and are any access arrangements relevant?
Private candidates deal with the centre and Cambridge directly. Follow the Cambridge private candidate guidance and confirm details with the centre you plan to use.
Is 0654 the same as 0653?
No. Combined Science and Co-ordinated Sciences have separate codes and separate syllabus documents. Some ideas overlap, but a resource for one may include or omit topics from the other.
The guide on choosing 0653 or 0654 resources explains the check, and the resource-choice journey walks through it from a student’s side.
A short example of using the code
A student has a revision book labelled “IGCSE Science” and a worksheet with no code. The entry form says 0654 with a confirmed exam year.
The student opens the 0654 subject page, downloads the syllabus for that year, writes the document name at the start of the file, and compares the worksheet’s topics with the list. Topics that fit the list stay in the plan. The rest are marked “check first” and raised with a teacher.
The habit matters more than the answer: the code and year decide what goes into the plan.
What do we not state here?
Take paper numbers, durations, weightings and grade thresholds from the current Cambridge syllabus for your exam year. Those belong to Cambridge and can change between syllabus versions. The subject page and syllabus PDF are where to read them.
Where to go next
Start with confirming the entry code and exam year, then see the Co-ordinated Sciences learning guide.
Once your code and year are confirmed, online one-to-one Co-ordinated Sciences tuition can start from the right syllabus instead of a guess.
