The right guidance is the guidance written for your exam year, and you confirm that in three steps: ask your centre for the year, open the Cambridge page for 0455, and match the syllabus document to your year. Everything else, including revision notes, is secondary to that.
This page does not list what differs between years. Cambridge is the source for that, and the aim here is a method you can repeat each time a resource disagrees with another.
Why do resources disagree?
Cambridge publishes syllabus documents for runs of exam years, and resources such as textbooks, revision notes and past-paper collections are each written for a particular document. A book bought for one run may not match the run you are sitting.
Sometimes the difference is small, such as wording. Sometimes it affects what is assessed or how a paper is arranged. You cannot tell which without checking.
A five-step check
- Ask your school or exam centre for your entry code and exam year, in writing.
- Open the Cambridge Economics 0455 subject page and locate the syllabus document that lists your exam year.
- Record the document name and year at the start of your revision file.
- Label every resource with the year it was written for.
- Mark anything uncertain as “check first” and ask your teacher or centre before you study it.
The syllabus and exam-year navigator gives you a place to write what you confirmed and what is still open. The syllabus version viewer helps you compare two versions when Cambridge has recorded changes.
Worked example
A fictional student, Aiman, is revising from three sources. A textbook from an older run, a revision website, and a teacher’s worksheet. His entry form says 0455 and lists an exam year.
Step 1. Aiman asks his centre to confirm the year in writing. The answer matches the entry form.
Step 2. He opens the Cambridge subject page and finds the syllabus document that lists that year. He saves its name.
Step 3. He labels each source. The textbook says which run it was written for, so he writes that year on its cover. The website does not say, so he labels it “unknown, check first”.
Step 4. For any chapter where he is unsure the scope matches, he compares the contents list with the syllabus document. Where the topic does not appear in his document, he sets it aside and asks his teacher.
The result is a short table:
| Resource | Written for | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Textbook | older run | use for skills, confirm scope |
| Revision website | unknown | check first |
| Teacher worksheet | current class | confirmed with teacher |
The habit is to decide the source before you decide what to study.
The mistake to watch for
Mistaken approach: “Both resources say Economics IGCSE, so they must cover the same thing.”
The subject name is the same, but the syllabus document may not be. The correction is to compare the code and year, never the subject name.
What should I ask my exam centre?
- Which syllabus year am I entered for?
- Which exam series am I entered for? Do not assume May/June or October/November.
- What are the entry deadlines?
- Are any access arrangements relevant to my entry?
Private candidates deal directly with their chosen centre and Cambridge.
Where to go next
Read the Economics 0455 code guide for the stable facts about the code, and the Economics 2027 change page for how to use pre-2027 and 2027 resources. Then build a study route from your confirmed document and see how the assessment guide fits with it.
Online one-to-one Economics tuition can start from your confirmed year, and the trial is a paid one-hour taught lesson so you can see how a teacher works with your notes.
