This set mixes the four skills from culture and international experiences: fair description, fact and opinion, misunderstandings and tone. All questions and texts are original. Try each question in writing before opening the answer, and write French in full sentences.
Questions go from easier to harder. There are no marks here, because the aim is to find which skill to repeat.
Questions
1. Which sentence avoids a stereotype? (a) Les Suisses sont tous riches. (b) Dans le village de ma correspondante, les magasins ferment à midi.
Show answer
(b). It names one village and one observable fact. Sentence (a) claims something about every person in a country, which is a stereotype.
2. Rewrite to keep the opinion but own it: Les repas sont trop longs.
Show answer
J’ai trouvé les repas un peu longs. “J’ai trouvé” makes it your view, and “un peu” softens it.
3. Fact or opinion? (a) Le concert commence à vingt heures. (b) Le concert sera génial.
Show answer
(a) fact, because it can be checked. (b) opinion, because “génial” is a judgement and also a prediction.
4. Read and answer. Text A: Nous sommes arrivés à Québec en février. Il faisait moins douze degrés, et c’était horrible. Text B: À Québec, en février, j’ai fait du patin sur le canal. J’ai adoré le froid. Name one fact and one opinion from Text A, then say how B differs.
Show answer
Text A fact: they arrived in Québec in February (or it was minus twelve degrees). Text A opinion: “c’était horrible”. Text B differs because the writer enjoys the cold: la personne du texte B adore le froid, alors que celle du texte A le trouve horrible. Both mention February in Québec, so the topic is shared and the feelings are opposite.
5. Write one French sentence comparing two classmates: Inès thinks the exchange programme is useful, Paul thinks it is too short.
Show answer
Inès trouve le programme d’échange utile, alors que Paul pense qu’il est trop court. Each opinion has an owner and “alors que” marks the contrast.
6. Choose the correct tense: Quand nous (sommes arrivés / arrivions) chez eux, la maison (était / a été) très calme.
Show answer
Quand nous sommes arrivés chez eux, la maison était très calme. The arrival is a completed event (passé composé), and the calm is background (imparfait).
7. Rewrite to remove blame: La famille de mon correspondant est impolie parce qu’elle ne dit pas merci.
Show answer
One version: Dans la famille de mon correspondant, on ne dit pas toujours merci à voix haute. Plus tard, j’ai compris que ce n’était pas une impolitesse, mais une habitude. The new version describes, explains and gives the benefit of the doubt.
8. Write a three-sentence story about a small misunderstanding at a school in Paris. Use the passé composé and the imparfait.
Show answer
A model: Pendant ma première semaine dans un collège à Paris, j’ai appelé mon professeur par son prénom. Il était surpris, mais il a souri. Plus tard, mon correspondant m’a expliqué qu’on dit « Monsieur » ou « Madame ». Check for: a past event, a background feeling, an explanation and no blame.
9. Choose tu or vous and give the reason. (a) A message to your correspondant’s grandmother, whom you have not met. (b) A message to your correspondant.
Show answer
(a) vous, because she is an adult you do not know and it is respectful. (b) tu, because he or she is a friend of your age. If the grandmother invites you to say “tu”, you can follow her lead.
10. Rewrite for formal tone: Salut Madame, je peux venir plus tard demain ?
Show answer
Madame, serait-il possible que j’arrive plus tard demain ? Je vous remercie de votre réponse. The opening, the verb form and the thanks are all polite. Another correct option is “Pourrais-je arriver plus tard demain ?”.
11. Write four sentences to a head teacher asking to move an exchange visit by one week because of exams. Be polite, give the reason and keep the writer’s role clear.
Show answer
A model: Madame la Directrice, je vous écris au sujet de la visite d’échange prévue en mars. Je ne pourrai pas y participer cette semaine-là, car j’ai des examens. Serait-il possible de décaler la visite d’une semaine ? Je vous remercie de votre réponse et vous prie d’agréer mes salutations distinguées. Check for vous, a reason, a polite request and a formal closing.
12. Write five sentences about a fictional visit to Marseille. Include one fact, one owned opinion, one comparison with home and no generalisation about the people.
Show answer
A model: L’été dernier, j’ai passé une semaine à Marseille chez mon oncle. Il habite près du port. J’ai trouvé la ville très animée, même le soir. Chez moi, les rues sont plus calmes après vingt heures. Dans son quartier, les voisins se disent bonjour dans l’escalier, et cela m’a beaucoup plu. Facts: week at the port. Opinion: “j’ai trouvé la ville très animée”. Comparison: “Chez moi”. No “les Marseillais sont…”.
If you got these wrong
- Questions 1, 2, 7, 12 wrong: your descriptions still generalise or judge. Review describing a fictional visit without stereotypes.
- Questions 3, 4, 5 wrong: you are mixing facts, opinions and owners. Review comparing two accounts while distinguishing facts and opinions.
- Questions 6, 7, 8 wrong: your story tenses or tone need work. Review writing about an intercultural misunderstanding respectfully.
- Questions 9, 10, 11 wrong: your register is mixed. Review adapting the tone of a message to the intended reader.
If the errors are spread across every lesson, revisit the module page for the learning route and then go on to integrating language skills.
