Compare two leisure choices using simple reasons

You can say what you like, but giving a reason and setting it against another choice is where the sentence gets longer.

Comparing two leisure choices means saying which one you prefer and why. In Cambridge IGCSE Malay as a foreign language (0546), hobbies and free time are everyday topics for both speaking and writing. Check the Cambridge subject page for the current task formats.

This lesson is part of everyday contexts and vocabulary. It uses the plan language from the date and location lesson.

How do you compare two things in Malay?

Three patterns carry most comparisons. Each is short and reusable.

PatternExampleMeaning
lebih + adjective + daripadaBerenang lebih menyeronokkan daripada bermain permainan video.Swimming is more fun than playing video games.
manakala (whereas)Saya suka membaca, manakala adik suka bersukan.I like reading, whereas my sister likes sport.
kerana (because)Saya lebih suka membaca kerana ia menenangkan.I prefer reading because it is calming.

The verb lebih suka means “prefer”. After daripada comes the thing being compared against.

Worked example

Hana is an invented student who compares two choices: cycling and watching films.

Pada waktu lapang, saya suka berbasikal dan menonton filem. Saya lebih suka berbasikal daripada menonton filem kerana saya dapat bersenam dan berjumpa kawan di taman. Manakala menonton filem lebih santai, tetapi saya duduk di rumah sahaja. Oleh itu, saya memilih berbasikal pada hujung minggu.

Step by step: the first sentence names both choices. The second states the preference with lebih suka … daripada and gives two reasons after kerana.

The third uses manakala to give the other side fairly.

The last sentence reaches a decision with oleh itu (therefore).

A good comparison always has the same shape: choice A, choice B, preference, reason, conclusion. If you keep that frame, you can swap in any hobbies.

A plausible mistake

A common error is to use lebih without daripada or to repeat lebih twice: Saya lebih suka berbasikal lebih menonton filem. The reader cannot tell what is being compared.

Correct it by placing daripada before the second item: Saya lebih suka berbasikal daripada menonton filem. Another slip is to give a reason without kerana: Saya suka membaca, ia tenang. Add kerana so the link between choice and reason is clear.

Self-check

  1. Complete: Bola sepak lebih ramai pemain ___ badminton. (choose daripada or kerana)
  2. Join with kerana: Saya suka melukis. Ia menenangkan.
  3. Write one sentence that compares reading and playing football using manakala.
Show answer
  1. daripada. The second item of a comparison follows daripada.
  2. Saya suka melukis kerana ia menenangkan.
  3. For example: Saya suka membaca, manakala kawan saya suka bermain bola sepak.

Where this leads next

The last lesson in this module is infer a new word from a short notice. Mixed questions are in the practice set. The Malay tuition page shows how individual teaching can focus on speaking with reasons.

Your next step

If your comparisons stop at a bare opinion, a teacher working with you one-to-one can prompt the reason behind each choice until you add it without being asked.

Paid one-hour trial at your assigned teacher’s confirmed rate, starting from RM80. You agree the teacher’s hourly rate before the trial, and ongoing lessons continue at that same rate. The schedule is arranged with your teacher after the trial.
