Infer a new word from a short notice

A notice with one unknown word can make the whole text feel closed, even when the other words give you most of the answer.

Inferring a word means working out its meaning from the words around it and from its parts. In Cambridge IGCSE Malay as a foreign language (0546), reading texts such as notices, signs and short messages include words you may not have met. Check the Cambridge subject page for the current reading task formats.

This lesson is part of everyday contexts and vocabulary. The same habit helps with the longer texts in the reading and listening module.

What clues can you use?

Look for four clues in order. The first is the type of text, the second is the neighbouring words, the third is the word’s root and the fourth is the prefix or suffix.

ClueQuestion to askExample
Text typeWhere would I see this notice?Library, shop, school
NeighboursWhat do the words next to it describe?“kerja … ” near “ditutup”
RootDo I know the base word?pembaikan: baik
AffixWhat does the affix add?pe-an: the act of / the process of

Useful affixes include pe-…-an (a process or its result), ter- (already done or most), ber- (having or doing) and -an (a thing that results). The root baik means “good” or “fine”. With memperbaiki it means “to repair” or “to improve”.

Worked example

The notice below is invented for this lesson.

PENGUMUMAN Perpustakaan sekolah ditutup sementara kerana kerja pembaikan bumbung. Semua buku pinjaman hendaklah dikembalikan di kaunter pengawal.

Suppose the word pembaikan is new. Step 1: the text type is a school notice about a closure. Step 2: it follows kerja (work) and refers to the bumbung (roof), so it must be a kind of work on a roof.

Step 3: the root is baik, which can mean good or fixed. Step 4: pe-an adds the idea of a process. So pembaikan means “repair work”.

Now try sementara. A temporary closure fits a repair job, and sementara means “for a time” or “temporarily”. The notice says the library will reopen, which supports this guess.

A plausible mistake

A common error is to guess from one similar-looking English word. A learner may see pengawal and pick a word that merely looks similar, or ignore the rest of the sentence. The notice tells us that books are returned at a kaunter (counter), so a person is at the counter.

Check the guess against the whole sentence. The root kawal means to guard or control, and pe- makes the person who does it: pengawal means “guard”. If the guess does not fit the sentence, change it.

Self-check

  1. In Pintu belakang ditutup kerana kerja pembinaan, what is pembinaan? (Root: bina, build.)
  2. What does ter- suggest in terbuka, from the root buka (open)?
  3. In Sila bawa kad pelajar ke pejabat, which clue tells you pejabat is a place?
Show answer
  1. Construction or building work. pe-an gives a process and bina gives build.
  2. Already open, or in an open state.
  3. Neighbouring words: ke marks direction towards a place, and sila bawa … ke suggests a destination. Text type also helps, as the notice is about a school.

Where this leads next

You have now covered all five lessons in everyday contexts and vocabulary. Test them together in the practice set. The Malay tuition page explains how a teacher can guide your reading one-to-one.

Your next step

If one unknown word still stops you reading the rest, working through notices with a teacher one-to-one can build the habit of guessing from clues before reaching for a dictionary.

Paid one-hour trial at your assigned teacher’s confirmed rate, starting from RM80. Other fees, schedules and ongoing arrangements are confirmed directly with your teacher after the trial class.

Tuition is arranged with a parent or guardian. Send them this page on WhatsApp and they can enquire for you.
