Everyday contexts and vocabulary: original mixed practice with explanations

Everyday Malay only becomes automatic when you write the sentences yourself before you see a model.

This set covers the five skills in everyday contexts and vocabulary: travel exchanges, routines, plans, comparisons and inferring words. The Malay stays in Malay, and the explanations are in English. Questions go from easier to harder.

Work with a pen, write your answer first, then open the answer. A running list of slips in T04 will show which skill needs another go, and T30 and T31 support the reading and writing practice.

Questions

1. Complete the sentence. Saya hendak ____ dua tiket ke Johor Bahru. (choose membeli or bertolak)

Show answer

membeli. The sentence means “I would like to buy two tickets to Johor Bahru.” Bertolak means depart and does not fit with tiket as the object.

2. Ask which platform the bus to Alor Setar leaves from.

Show answer

Bas ke Alor Setar bertolak dari platform berapa? The question word berapa asks for a number, ke gives the destination and dari gives the starting point.

3. Put these in order to make a short routine: (a) Akhir sekali, saya membuat kerja rumah. (b) Pertama, saya pulang dari sekolah. (c) Selepas itu, saya makan tengah hari.

Show answer

(b), (c), (a). Pertama opens, selepas itu continues and akhir sekali closes.

4. Write “at 8.15 in the morning” in Malay words.

Show answer

pukul lapan suku pagi (or pukul 8.15 pagi). Suku means a quarter, and pukul comes before the hour.

5. Choose di, ke or dari. Kami akan makan ___ restoran itu pada hari Jumaat.

Show answer

di. The eating happens at the restaurant, so the location word is di. Ke would be needed after a movement verb such as pergi.

6. Write “on Monday, 2 November” in Malay.

Show answer

pada hari Isnin, 2 November. The day comes first, then the month name.

7. Complete the comparison. Teh tarik lebih manis ___ kopi o.

Show answer

daripada. The second item in a comparison follows daripada.

8. Join the two sentences with kerana. Saya suka berenang. Ia menyihatkan badan.

Show answer

Saya suka berenang kerana ia menyihatkan badan. The reason follows kerana.

9. A notice says: Kantin ditutup selama dua hari kerana kerja penyelenggaraan. Guess penyelenggaraan.

Show answer

It means maintenance. The text type is a school notice about a closure. The word follows kerja (work), and pe-an suggests a process. This is a good guess from context, and it fits the closure for repairs.

10. A sign says: Pusat maklumat pelancong di tingkat satu. What does pelancong mean?

Show answer

Tourist. The root lancong means to tour, and pe- makes the person who does it. An information centre makes sense for visitors.

11. Write a two-sentence message to a friend: you will go to the library on Saturday at ten o’clock.

Show answer

One model: Saya akan ke perpustakaan pada hari Sabtu. Kita berjumpa di pintu masuk pada pukul sepuluh pagi. The first sentence has the activity and the day. The second has the place and the time. Your wording can differ if it includes a verb, a day, a place and a time.

Questions people ask

How should I use this practice set?

Cover the answer, write your own sentence or choice, then open the answer and compare. Note whether any error was vocabulary, a preposition or a missing link word. Come back to the same question type a few days later without notes, because spaced repetition helps these patterns stick.

Are these real exam questions?

No. Every question and passage here is original and written for practice, and the people and notices are invented. Check the Cambridge subject page for the current syllabus and task formats before you plan your revision.

Do I need to write full answers in Malay?

Yes. The answers stay in Malay because the assessed language is Malay. Short, correct sentences are better than long ones with errors, so aim for clear sentences with the verb included.
