Compare two supported interpretations

A short passage can honestly be read in two ways, and the skill is to show which reading the words support better.

To compare two interpretations, state each reading, give the clues for each and say which the passage supports better. The skill appears when a question asks “adakah … atau …” or invites you to consider another view of a character or event.

It belongs to the first-language comprehension module. It uses the habits from selecting evidence and stating a theme.

What makes an interpretation supported?

An interpretation is a reading of what a detail means. It is supported when specific words in the passage lead to it. Two readings can both be supported, and the comparison is about how much each one rests on.

Follow this method.

  1. State reading A in one sentence.
  2. List its clues. Quote short pieces.
  3. State reading B and list its clues.
  4. Look for strain. Is there a detail that fits one reading badly?
  5. Judge. Say which is stronger and what would make you change your mind.

Worked example

The passage is invented.

Amir menerima slip keputusan, tersenyum kecil, lalu memasukkannya ke dalam beg dan menutup zip dengan cepat. Dia tidak menunjukkannya kepada rakan-rakan yang menunggu. Sepanjang jalan pulang, dia menggenggam tali begnya erat-erat.

Question: Mengapakah Amir tidak menunjukkan slip keputusannya? Bandingkan dua kemungkinan.

Reading A, he is disappointed. Clues: “menutup zip dengan cepat” and “tidak menunjukkannya kepada rakan-rakan”. He hides the slip as if it were something to cover up.

Reading B, he is quietly proud and wants his family to see it first. Clues: “tersenyum kecil” and “menggenggam tali begnya erat-erat”. The smile and the tight grip suggest he is protecting something good.

Strain check. Reading A struggles with the smile. Reading B struggles with the rushed zip, but a person who is keeping good news safe can also close a bag quickly.

Judgement:

The answer treats both fairly and decides by weight of evidence.

The mistake to watch for

One-sided answer: Amir kecewa kerana dia menyorokkan slip itu.

The student chose a reading, used one clue and ignored the smile.

The correction is to hold the second reading in mind while you read. Ask of every detail: which reading does this fit, and does it fit both? A detail that fits only one reading is your strongest evidence for it.

Check yourself

All content is invented.

1. For Amir’s passage, which detail supports reading B most clearly?

Show answer

“tersenyum kecil”, with “menggenggam tali begnya erat-erat” as support. A smile is a positive sign, and the tight grip suggests he is guarding something valued.

2. Add one sentence to the passage that would make reading A clearly stronger.

Show answer

Any detail pointing to disappointment would do, for example “Dia menunduk dan tidak membalas sapaan rakannya.” It adds a negative sign that reading B cannot easily explain.

3. A student writes “Amir takut kepada ibunya” with no quotation. What is missing?

Show answer

There is no clue from the passage, and the mother is not even mentioned. This is a guess, not a supported interpretation.

Where this leads next

The last skill in this module is using a precise paraphrase without changing the author’s qualification, which keeps your own wording faithful. Test the module in the first-language comprehension practice set. The summary selection and paraphrase studio and the writing revision compare view support further practice.

A teacher can question your readings the way a marker would in online one-to-one Malay tuition.

Questions people ask

Are there two correct answers?

Sometimes the text supports two readings, and a question may invite you to consider both. A reading is acceptable only when you can point to words in the passage behind it. A reading with no clue behind it is not an interpretation, so it does not count as a second answer.

How do I decide which reading is stronger?

Count and weigh the clues. A reading backed by several clues that agree is stronger than one resting on a single clue. Also check for any detail that sits awkwardly with a reading. Say which is stronger and why, in one or two sentences.

Do I need to choose one in the end?

Follow what the question asks. If it asks you to compare, set out both readings fairly and then give a reasoned judgement. If it asks for one interpretation, give that one and use the other only to show why yours is better. Check the 0696 syllabus page for your exam year.
