Plot is what happens. Theme is what the happenings add up to. When a question asks for the theme or main idea, a retelling of the story loses the mark however accurate it is. The answer needs a general statement about people or life, supported by a few events.
This lesson belongs to the first-language comprehension module. It builds on selecting evidence for a question.
How do you move from plot to theme?
Plot sentences contain names and verbs: “Lina membeli ubat.” A theme sentence removes the names and says something that could be true of anyone. Go through four steps.
- Summarise the events in one line. This is your plot, and it stays in your notes.
- Ask what the events show. What does this change, choice or cost reveal about people?
- Write a general statement. Drop the names, use a noun such as “pengorbanan”, “kejujuran” or “kesunyian”, and add what the passage says about it.
- Back it with one or two events. Now the plot becomes evidence.
Worked example
The story is invented.
Lina menyimpan wang saku selama enam bulan untuk membeli basikal baharu. Apabila jirannya, Mak Cik Ros, jatuh sakit, Lina menggunakan semua wang itu untuk membeli ubat. Beberapa minggu kemudian, anak Mak Cik Ros menghadiahkan Lina sebuah basikal lama yang masih elok.
Question: Apakah tema petikan ini?
Step 1, plot line: Lina saves for a bicycle, spends the money on medicine for a sick neighbour and later receives a used bicycle.
Step 2, what it shows: Lina gives up something she wants for someone else, and the story ends with kindness returned.
Step 3, general statement: Pengorbanan demi orang lain bukan sahaja menunjukkan kebaikan hati, malah boleh dibalas dengan cara yang tidak disangka.
Step 4, support: Lina menggunakan “semua wang itu” untuk ubat, dan kemudian menerima basikal lama.
Notice the theme sentence has no names and could describe other stories too. The evidence in step 4 ties it to this one.
The mistake to watch for
Retelling answer: Lina menyimpan wang untuk membeli basikal tetapi menggunakannya untuk membeli ubat Mak Cik Ros dan akhirnya dapat basikal lama.
Every fact is correct, but the sentence only reports events and does not name an idea.
A second error is a theme that is too thin, such as “Lina budak baik”. It describes one character and does not say what the story explores.
The correction is to test your sentence: could it be understood by someone who has not read the passage? If not, it is still plot.

All content is invented.
1. Which is a theme: “Adi berbohong kepada cikgu, tetapi mengaku apabila rakannya dihukum”, or “Keberanian mengaku kesalahan menuntut kita menerima akibatnya”?
Show answer
The second is the theme. It names a general idea without character names. The first is the plot.
2. Turn this plot into a theme: “Pak Hamid menutup kedainya dan berpindah ke bandar untuk tinggal bersama anaknya, tetapi dia merindui kampung.”
Show answer
One possible theme: Ikatan dengan tempat asal sukar dilepaskan walaupun kita berpindah demi keluarga. It removes the name, states the idea and could be supported by “merindui kampung”.
3. Why is “Lina budak baik” weak as a theme?
Show answer
It only describes one character. A theme names an idea the passage explores, such as sacrifice, and says something about it.
Where this leads next
Once you can state a theme, you can compare two readings of the same text in comparing two supported interpretations. Test the whole module in the first-language comprehension practice set. The summary selection and paraphrase studio has original passages for theme practice.
A teacher can listen to how you phrase themes and sharpen them in online one-to-one Malay tuition.
