First-language comprehension: original mixed practice with explanations

Skills that feel clear in separate lessons can wobble when they arrive mixed together in one passage.

On this page
  1. Passage 1: perpustakaan kampung
  2. Passage 2: Abang Fikri
  3. Passage 3: tinjauan tidur
  4. If you got these wrong

This set mixes the five skills of the first-language comprehension module: implied ideas, evidence, theme, competing readings and precise paraphrase. All passages and people are invented. Write each answer in Malay before you open the working.

Keep a note of the skill that failed on each question. The mistake log and retest queue is a good place for it, and the summary selection and paraphrase studio has more passages.

Passage 1: perpustakaan kampung

Show answer

“hanya dibuka pada hari Rabu dan Sabtu”. The word “hanya” and the two named days prove that it is open on limited days.

Q2 (easy).

Show answer

She values books and cares for them. Two clues agree: she keeps old books because she is “tidak sanggup membuangnya”, and she wipes the table twice after a child borrows a book. Model answer: Puan Salmiah menghargai buku kerana dia tidak sanggup membuang buku lama dan mengelap meja dua kali apabila budak meminjam.

Q3 (medium). Parafrasakan: “Kebanyakan buku di rak bawah kelihatan baharu, mungkin kerana jarang dipinjam.” Kekalkan kualifikasi.

Show answer

Qualifiers: “kebanyakan” (most, not all), “kelihatan” (appear, not are) and “mungkin” (possible reason, not certain). A version saying “Semua buku di rak bawah baharu kerana tiada orang meminjamnya” fails on all three.

Passage 2: Abang Fikri

Abang Fikri berlatih menendang bola setiap petang walaupun pasukannya sering kalah.

Q4 (medium). Apakah yang tersirat daripada “bersorak paling kuat”?

Show answer

He is genuinely happy for the team and shows no jealousy, even though he did not play. The clue is the superlative “paling kuat” set against “hanya menjadi pemain simpanan”. Model answer: Fikri gembira bagi pasukannya walaupun hanya pemain simpanan, kerana dia bersorak “paling kuat”.

Q5 (medium).

Show answer

(a) is plot: it has a name and lists events. (b) is a theme: it has no names, states a general idea and can be backed by “hanya menjadi pemain simpanan” and “bersorak paling kuat”.

Q6 (harder).

Show answer

The theme sentence has no names and the quotation is short and exact.

Q7 (harder).

Show answer

Reading A: he still wants to become a main player. Clue: “hanya menjadi pemain simpanan”. Reading B: he loves the game for itself and not for recognition. Clues: he trains “setiap petang” even when the team loses and does so in a field described as “kosong”, with no audience. B is stronger because it fits his earlier habit and the empty field, while A rests on one clue.

Passage 3: tinjauan tidur

This is an invented school survey.

Q8 (medium). Petik bukti bahawa tugasan bukan satu-satunya sebab murid kurang tidur.

Show answer

“sebahagian kecil mengaku bermain permainan video hingga lewat”. The quotation shows a second reason. The first half of the sentence (“tugasan yang banyak”) gives the other reason and would not prove the point.

Q9 (harder). Parafrasakan ayat pertama tanpa mengubah kualifikasi.

Show answer

Qualifiers: “menurut tinjauan” (a survey source), “kira-kira” (about) and “dua pertiga” (not all). The numbers stay as they are, and “lebih kurang” keeps the approximation.

Q10 (harder). Seorang pelajar menulis: “Semua murid Tingkatan 4 tidur kurang daripada tujuh jam kerana tugasan.” Senaraikan tiga perubahan terhadap teks.

Show answer

(1) “kira-kira dua pertiga” became “semua”, so a fraction became everyone. (2) “kebanyakan … memberi alasan” (most gave this excuse) became a flat statement of cause using “kerana”. (3) The minority who blamed video games has been dropped. The corrected claim keeps the fraction and presents the cause as the students’ own reason.

Questions people ask

Are these questions from Cambridge papers?

No. Every passage and question is original and invented for practice, so no real exam content is copied. They train the skills in this module. For the format of your own paper, check the Cambridge IGCSE Malay 0696 syllabus page and your exam year's materials.

How should I use the answers?

Write your own answer in Malay first, then open the worked answer and compare. Look at the clue and the qualifier, not only the final sentence. Mark which skill went wrong and note it in your mistake log.

Should I answer in Malay?

Yes. The passages and model answers are in Malay, and your answers should be too, because the language you write is part of a first-language task. The explanations on this page are in English only to guide you.
