To express time and frequency in Malay, name when with a time phrase and how often with a frequency word placed before the verb: Saya selalu bangun pada pukul enam pagi. One sentence can hold both, and each has its own fixed place.
This lesson follows asking and answering practical questions and sits in foreign-language communication foundations. Routines, schedules and habits are among the most common topics in everyday-context tasks.
How do I say the time of day?
Start with pukul plus the hour. Add a word for the part of the day to remove doubt.
| Malay | Meaning |
|---|---|
| pukul tujuh pagi | seven in the morning |
| pukul dua petang | two in the afternoon |
| pukul lapan malam | eight at night |
| pukul tujuh tiga puluh minit | 7.30 |
| hari Isnin, hari Sabtu | on Monday, on Saturday |
Use pada before a time or a day when you give it as a fact: pada pukul enam, pada hari Sabtu. In casual speech, pada is often dropped.
How do I say how often?
Frequency words form a scale from most to least. Learn them in order, because the scale helps you choose the right one.
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| setiap hari | every day |
| selalu | always, usually |
| kerap | frequently |
| kadang-kadang | sometimes |
| jarang | rarely |
| tidak pernah | never |
For counted frequency, put the number first: dua kali seminggu (twice a week), sebulan sekali (once a month), tiga kali sehari (three times a day).
Worked example
Hafiz is an invented student. Describe his Saturday routine in four sentences.
Step 1, list the facts. He wakes at 7 in the morning. He plays badminton twice a week. He rarely watches television. He studies at 8 at night.
Step 2, place the time phrases. Put each time phrase after the verb or at the start.
Step 3, place the frequency words. Put each one before its verb.
Pada hari Sabtu, Hafiz bangun pada pukul tujuh pagi. Dia bermain badminton dua kali seminggu. Dia jarang menonton televisyen. Dia belajar pada pukul lapan malam.
Step 4, check. In the third sentence, jarang sits before menonton. In the second, the number comes before kali, and seminggu is one word.
The mistake to watch for
The common slip is to move the frequency word to the end of the sentence, as English sometimes does.
Mistaken answer: Saya pergi ke perpustakaan selalu. Saya main bola tiga kali satu minggu.
Both sentences sound unnatural. Frequency words belong before the verb, and “per week” is joined into one word: seminggu.
Correction: Saya selalu pergi ke perpustakaan. Saya bermain bola tiga kali seminggu.
A reliable habit is to underline the verb in your draft and look immediately to its left. If a frequency word belongs in the sentence, it should be there.

Try these first, then open each answer.
1. Say “I never eat breakfast” in Malay.
Show answer
Saya tidak pernah bersarapan. Tidak pernah goes before the verb. Saya tidak pernah makan sarapan is also correct.
2. Write one sentence: Aina swims twice a week.
Show answer
Aina berenang dua kali seminggu. The number comes before kali, and seminggu is one word.
3. Correct this sentence: Kami makan di kantin kadang-kadang pada pukul satu tengah hari.
Show answer
Kami kadang-kadang makan di kantin pada pukul satu tengah hari. The frequency word moves before the verb, and the time phrase stays at the end.
Where this leads next
With time and frequency in place, you can give a reason for what you like in connecting a preference with a reason. Then test everything in the foundations practice set. The summary selection and paraphrase studio helps when you practise rewriting a timetable passage in your own words.
A teacher can turn your real weekly timetable into practice sentences, which is a natural use of online one-to-one Malay tuition.
