Foreign-language communication foundations: original mixed practice with explanations

You have read the five lessons, and now you want to see whether the patterns hold when no one is prompting you.

These ten questions mix the five skills of foreign-language communication foundations, ordered from easier to harder. All people and situations are invented. Write each answer in Malay before you open the explanation.

For a record of the questions you miss, use the mistake log and retest queue. To compare an early answer with a corrected one, the writing revision compare view is helpful.

Questions

1. Correct this sentence: Dia adalah 14 tahun.

Show answer

Dia berumur 14 tahun. Adalah does not link a person to an age. Use berumur.

2. Write three sentences introducing an invented boy called Daniel: 16 years old, lives in Penang, plays badminton.

Show answer

One possible answer: Kawan saya bernama Daniel. Dia berumur 16 tahun dan tinggal di Pulau Pinang. Dia suka bermain badminton. Check that the age uses berumur, the place has di, and each sentence has a subject.

3. Ask politely what time the bus leaves.

Show answer

Maaf, pukul berapa bas bertolak? The fact is a clock time, so use pukul berapa. Maaf at the start makes it polite.

4. Make this question polite for an adult stranger: Kamu tahu di mana tandas?

Show answer

Maaf, boleh saya tanya, di mana tandas? Replace kamu with a softener and drop the pronoun, or use anda: Maaf, anda tahu di mana tandas?

5. Answer in a full sentence. Question: Berapa harga nasi lemak? Fact: RM4.

Show answer

Harga nasi lemak ialah RM4. The answer repeats the subject and gives the amount.

6. Correct this sentence: Saya pergi ke pasar raya selalu.

Show answer

Saya selalu pergi ke pasar raya. The frequency word belongs before the verb.

7. Write in Malay: “twice a week” and “at 7.30 in the evening”.

Show answer

dua kali seminggu and pada pukul tujuh tiga puluh minit malam. Seminggu is one word, and the part of the day follows the time.

8. Join into one sentence: Saya suka kucing. Kucing itu comel.

Show answer

Saya suka kucing kerana kucing itu comel. The reason is a full clause with its own subject.

9. Correct this answer: Saya lebih suka teh. Kerana manis.

Show answer

Saya lebih suka teh daripada kopi kerana teh itu manis. The fragment is joined to the preference. Daripada adds the second choice for the comparison.

10. You forgot the word kantin. Describe it in Malay without using the word.

Show answer

One possible answer: Maaf, saya lupa perkataannya. Tempat murid membeli makanan di sekolah. The description names the place by its function.

What next?

If most answers were correct, try writing five sentences about your own week that use time, frequency and a reason. If two or three types keep returning, re-read those lessons and retry the set in a few days. The summary selection and paraphrase studio gives you short passages to rewrite in your own words.

Questions people ask

How should I use this practice set?

Cover the answer, write your own in Malay, then open the explanation. Compare the pattern, not just the words, because many different correct sentences are possible. Keep a note of which question types you miss and revisit the matching lesson.

Do I have to match the model answers exactly?

No. Where a question asks you to write your own sentence, the model is one possible answer. Check that yours has the same structure: the right fact, the right word order and a complete clause after kerana.

How often should I repeat the set?

Retry the questions you missed after a few days, in a fresh sitting. If you can answer them without looking, the pattern has stuck. If not, use the routing section to choose a lesson to re-read.
