I need to distinguish 0546 from 0696

Two Malay codes, similar names and a stack of practice sheets make it easy to study for the wrong one.

0546 is Malay Foreign Language and 0696 is First Language Malay. They are separate Cambridge qualifications, and the one that matters to you is the code on your entry, confirmed by your school or exam centre.

This page helps you settle that question and then choose practice to match. It does not list components or marks, because those come from the current syllabus for each code.

What do students usually say?

“My school just said I am doing Malay.” “I speak Malay at home, so I assumed first language.” “I downloaded a practice paper and it felt too easy, or too hard.”

All three are reasonable places to start. None of them tells you which code you are entered for, which is why the check below matters.

What could be causing the confusion?

  • The titles are close, and both say Malay.
  • Practice material online often does not name its code.
  • Home language and school entry can point in different directions.
  • SPM Bahasa Melayu habits make every Malay task feel familiar. See using SPM writing habits for the wrong task.

How do I confirm my route, step by step?

  1. Ask your school or exam centre which code is on your entry. Write the answer down with the exam year.
  2. Open the Cambridge page for that code: 0546 or 0696 guides link to it.
  3. Read the syllabus for your year and list the skills and task types assessed.
  4. Label your practice material with a code. If you cannot tell, treat it as unchecked.
  5. Use the syllabus and exam-year navigator to keep the code, year and open questions together.

Worked example: sorting a practice pile

Nadia is entered for 0546. Her pile has four sheets.

SheetWhat it asksFits 0546?
AWrite a short message inviting a friend to a picnicYes, a short practical message
BDiscuss how an author develops a theme in a passageCheck first: this is interpretation work, closer to the first-language route
CFill in affixes in sentencesYes, accuracy helps every route
DUnmarked photocopy, no codeUnchecked

She keeps A and C, sets B aside, and asks her teacher about D. Her pile is now sorted by evidence, not by guess.

Sheet B is labelled “check first” and not “wrong”, because which task types apply is for the syllabus to say. She should confirm that, not rely on this table.

How do I choose practice afterwards?

If you are on 0546, start with foreign-language communication foundations and foreign-language writing. If you are on 0696, start with first-language comprehension and first-language writing and organisation.

Everyone can use grammar and sentence accuracy. The lesson on distinguishing 0546 from 0696 by the actual entry goes through the same check in more detail, and the assessment guide explains who is responsible for what.

Can the summary studio and compare view help?

Once the route is fixed, the summary selection and paraphrase studio helps you practise choosing relevant points and writing in your own words. The writing revision compare view shows two drafts side by side. Both keep your work on your own device and do not give an official mark.

When is self-study enough?

If your school has confirmed the code and you can match your practice to the syllabus, you can manage the route yourself. Keep a short log of which tasks you did and which code they belong to.

When might one-to-one tuition help?

A teacher can look at your actual Malay and your route together, and choose tasks so neither is guessed. That is useful when the route is settled but you cannot see which skill to work on.

See online one-to-one Malay tuition. The paid one-hour trial starts from RM80 at the assigned teacher’s confirmed rate, and registration and entry stay with your exam centre.

Questions people ask

Can I choose between 0546 and 0696 myself?

Entry is arranged through your school or exam centre, so speak to them. They can tell you which code is on your entry. We can help you prepare for the route you are entered for, but we do not enter candidates or decide routes.

Is 0696 harder than 0546?

They are different qualifications aimed at different learners, so comparing difficulty is not useful. What matters is which one matches your entry and your Malay, and whether your practice follows that route.

I speak Malay at home. Does that mean 0696?

Not automatically. Home language is one factor, but the code on your entry decides which syllabus applies. Ask your school or exam centre, and read the syllabus page for that code before choosing practice.

What if I already practised the wrong route?

Little is wasted. Vocabulary, grammar and reading all transfer. Sort your practice into what matches your route and what does not, keep the first group, and use the mistake log to note gaps for the route you actually sit.

Where can I see the official differences?

On the Cambridge subject pages for each code. They list the syllabus for each exam year, so compare the skills and task types there rather than relying on summaries, including ours.
