Original Malay practice with explained answers

Practice only helps when the task matches your route, and a pile of unmarked sheets rarely does.

On this page
  1. Part A: accuracy for everyone
  2. Part B: 0546 tasks
  3. Part C: 0696 tasks
  4. If you got these wrong
  5. How do I keep practising?
  6. Can a teacher mark this for me?

These nine questions are original Malay practice written for this site. They are not past-paper items and do not predict any exam. Each is labelled for everyone, for 0546 or for 0696, so you can keep to your own route.

Try each question on paper first, then open the answer. The explanations matter more than the answers, so read them even when you were right.

Part A: accuracy for everyone

Question 1 (everyone, easy). Correct the spacing: Surat itu dihantar dirumah Aina.

Show answer

Surat itu dihantar di rumah Aina. The word dihantar is a verb with the prefix di- (written together). Di rumah marks a place, so di is a separate word.

Question 2 (everyone, easy). Write the full verb: Dia suka ___ (tulis) cerita pendek.

Show answer

menulis. The prefix meN- changes to men- before t, and the t drops out, so tulis becomes menulis.

Question 3 (everyone, easy). Choose the connector: Kami tidak ke taman ___ hujan lebat. (kerana / walaupun)

Show answer

kerana. The rain is the reason for not going. Walaupun (although) would make sense only if they went anyway.

Question 4 (everyone, medium). Make the reference clear: Siti memberi Aina buku itu, dan dia tersenyum.

Show answer

Siti memberi Aina buku itu, dan Aina tersenyum. (or Siti tersenyum, depending on who you mean.) Here dia could be either girl, so name the person when the reader could be unsure.

Question 5 (everyone, medium). Rewrite for a school principal: Cikgu, bagi saya cuti esok.

Show answer

Tuan Pengetua, saya ingin memohon kebenaran untuk bercuti esok. The original is a command in casual speech. A request to a principal uses a respectful form of address and a polite verb.

Question 6 (everyone, medium). Fix the literal translation: Saya pergi kepada pasar semalam.

Show answer

Saya pergi ke pasar semalam. Kepada is used before a person (kepada Ali), while ke is used for a place. English “to” covers both, which is how the error appears.

Part B: 0546 tasks

Question 7 (0546, medium). Write a short message to a friend that invites them to a picnic, says when and where, and asks for a reply.

Show answer

One possible answer:

Hai Farid, hujung minggu ini saya ingin mengadakan perkelahan di Taman Tasik pada hari Sabtu, pukul 9 pagi. Adakah kamu boleh datang? Tolong beritahu saya sebelum Jumaat.

The message covers three purposes: invite, when and where, reply. A strong answer covers each clearly and keeps the tone friendly. See covering each purpose in a personal message.

Question 8 (0546, medium). Read the notice. Perpustakaan ditutup pada hari Jumaat minggu ini kerana kerja penyelenggaraan. Buku boleh dipulangkan di kaunter pengawal. How can a student return a book on Friday?

Show answer

At the security counter (kaunter pengawal). The library is closed, but the notice gives a different place for returns. The answer is the detail that matches the question, not the closure itself. See locating a requirement in a notice.

Part C: 0696 tasks

Question 9 (0696, harder). Read: Setiap petang Pak Samad menyapu halaman yang sudah bersih itu. Dia memandang ke arah jalan, tetapi tiada sesiapa yang datang. What is suggested about Pak Samad, and what supports it?

Show answer

It suggests he is lonely and waiting for someone. The support is that he sweeps a yard that is already clean, which shows he is filling time, and that he looks at the road with nobody coming. The text never says “lonely”, so the idea is implied. Quote the detail, then explain what it suggests. See explaining an implied idea.

How do I keep practising?

Log each error in the mistake log, then build a fresh mixed set with the practice builder that targets that error. The builder only serves reviewed original items and tells you honestly when none are available.

Follow the revision guide for the retest pattern. Every module also has its own practice set, such as the grammar and accuracy set.

Can a teacher mark this for me?

Paid tuition lets a teacher read your answers to these tasks and listen to your speaking. See online one-to-one Malay tuition. The paid one-hour trial starts from RM80 at the assigned teacher’s confirmed rate.

Questions people ask

Are these real Cambridge past paper questions?

No. Every question here is original, written for this site, and is not an official exam item or a prediction of one. For official materials, use the resources on the Cambridge page for your code, and use these to practise skills.

Which questions should I do for 0546 or 0696?

Each question is labelled. Questions marked for everyone test grammar and accuracy that both routes need. Questions marked 0546 or 0696 follow the skills of that route, so skip the other route's labels unless you have spare time.

How should I use the answers?

Attempt each question on paper before opening the answer. Compare your response, find the exact point that differs, and write it in your mistake log. Then build a fresh set in the practice builder to retest.

Are the answers the only acceptable answers?

For written and spoken tasks there are many good responses. The answers here are one model, and the explanation says what a strong response needs to do. Compare your choices to the reasoning, not only to the wording.
