这个题组有十道原创题,由易到难,涵盖语境中的词义的全部五课。第 1 至 3 题是单个词,第 4 至 7 题是短语和意象,第 8 至 10 题混合所有技能。所有文章都是专为本页撰写的。
每道题都在纸上写成完整句子,划出你用到的线索,然后才打开答案。这里没有分数,因为目标是精准的解释,而不是得分。做错的题请使用末尾的对照表。

1. “The new boy was diffident; he spoke only when asked and kept his eyes on his shoes.” “diffident” 是什么意思?

线索:只有被问才说话,眼睛盯着鞋子。方向:害羞、缺乏自信。
答案: “Diffident” 的意思是害羞、缺乏自信。他避免开口,也不看别人,说明他不习惯被人注意。
2. “Unlike her gregarious sister, Nila preferred to read alone in the garden.” “gregarious” 是什么意思?

“Unlike” 表示对比。Nila 喜欢独自一人,所以她的姐妹一定相反。
答案: “Gregarious” 的意思是爱交际、喜欢与人相处。与喜欢独自读书的 Nila 形成对比,说明她的姐妹喜欢和别人在一起。
3. “The room was so stifling that even the fan seemed to give up.” “stifling” 暗示什么?

线索:连风扇都帮不上忙。结果:空气沉闷。
答案: “Stifling” 暗示闷热、不通风、让人难以呼吸。风扇都 “gives up”,说明空气太沉重,风扇也无济于事。
4. “When the referee blew the whistle, the crowd exploded.” “exploded” 是字面义还是比喻义?解释它暗示什么。

人群不可能真的爆炸,所以是比喻义。它把突然爆发的声音和动作比作炸弹。
答案: 它暗示人群突然大声地爆发,在等待哨声之后,欢呼或叫喊一下子释放出来。
5. “The announcement hung in the air like a wet towel.” 解释它对气氛的暗示。

6. “After the third warning, the teacher’s patience ran out.” 在语境中解释 “ran out”。

答案: 它的意思是老师再也无法容忍这种行为。经过三次警告,她愿意忍耐的程度已经用完,接下来要采取行动了。
7. “Dawn crept over the hills; the farmer crept over the wet grass to the barn.” 哪一个 “crept” 是比喻义,哪一个是字面义?

9. 原文:“Our so-called champion lost in the first round, and with a shrug.” 哪个改写保留了语气?(a) “Our champion lost in the first round.” (b) “The person we were told was a champion lost in round one and did not seem to care.” (c) “The champion was unlucky to lose early.”

(b)。 它用 “we were told” 保留了 “so-called”,用 “did not seem to care” 保留了 “with a shrug”。(a) 是中性的,丢了讽刺。(c) 为失败开脱,改变了意思。
10. “Mr Tan was laconic. Asked about the flooded road, he pointed and said, ‘Drive.’ The drivers behind him fumed.” (a) 推断 “laconic”。(b) 在语境中解释 “fumed”。

(a) “Laconic” 的意思是话极少。线索是他的整个回答只有一个词,“Drive”。
(b) “Fumed” 是比喻义:人不可能真的冒烟。它暗示后面的司机又生气又沮丧,但没有发作,也许因为他没有说明路况。
