意象是通过与另一样东西比较，让你在脑中产生画面的语言。要解释好它，不能只说出比较的内容，还要说明被比较的事物带来什么，以及这与文中那一刻如何吻合。
这一课建立在辨认作者刻意的语言选择之上，属于作者的选择与效果的一部分。
怎样拆解一个意象？
用“两边加一座桥”的想法：被描写的事物、被拿来比较的事物，以及在两者之间传递的特质。
- 说出两边。 描写的是什么？被比作什么？
- 列出你对第二边的了解。 想它的特质、行为、感受和用途。
- 选出合适的联想。 并非全部相关。绳子也是棕色、粗糙的，但这里可能无关紧要。
- 连回语境。 说明所选特质如何适用于文段中的情形。
- 用一句清楚的话写出效果。
例题
原创句子：By the third hour of waiting, her patience was a thin rope, fraying one strand at a time.
第 1 步，两边： 耐心被比作一条绳子。
第 2 步，绳子的特点： 完整时很强，被拉紧时承受压力，会磨损，会突然断裂，用来吊住东西。
第 3 步，哪些合适： “thin” 和 “fraying one strand at a time” 指向逐渐变弱，但还没断。被拉紧则对应等待的压力。
第 4 步，语境： 她已经等了三个小时，所以压力是慢慢累积的。
第 5 步，效果：
“The metaphor compares her patience to a thin rope, so it suggests something that was once strong but is now close to failing. ‘Fraying one strand at a time’ shows the loss happening slowly, which makes the reader sense that a sudden snap, perhaps of anger, could come at any moment.”
意思是：这个隐喻暗示她的耐心曾经坚韧，如今快要撑不住；一丝一缕地磨损，显示耐心在缓慢流失，让读者感到怒气随时可能猛然爆发。
注意这个回答用了作者自己的词（“thin”、“strand”），所以解释建立在文段上，而不是一般的绳子知识。
要留意的错误
典型失误，是把意象换种说法重说一遍。
错误回答： “The writer compares her patience to a rope to show that her patience is like a rope and is running out.”
这里说了两次 “like a rope”，只有最后的 “running out” 增加了意思，也没有与文段连起来。
改正的方法，是拆解比喻的另一边：“A rope can hold weight until it weakens, so her patience was once able to bear the wait but is now close to failing.” 再连回情境：她已经等了三个小时。
自我检测
1. 在 The city was a hive at noon, every window humming 中，“hive” 有哪一个合适的联想？

蜂巢拥挤而繁忙，许多小生物在里面工作。这与正午挤满忙碌人群的城市相符。“Humming” 支持持续不断的背景声，就像蜜蜂的嗡嗡声。
2. 一位学生这样解释 “Her smile was a locked door”：“It shows her smile is like a door.”，请用两句话改进。

3. 在 “The rumour spread like wildfire through the school.” 中，哪个联想不合适：fast、hard to control，还是 cooked food？

“Cooked food” 不合适。野火蔓延迅速、难以扑灭，这两点都与谣言在人群中传播的方式吻合。
