Check exam year and language route before using a model

A model answer can look perfect and still belong to a different qualification or a different year.

A model answer is only a good model if it matches your code and your exam year. Before you study one, check two labels: which qualification it was written for, and which syllabus version it follows.

This lesson belongs to Chinese qualification identification and follows telling the codes apart.

Why do both labels matter?

The first label is the route. A response written for 0509 may assume reading and writing demands that are different from 0523 or 0547.

The second label is the year. Cambridge can update syllabuses, so a model tied to an earlier version may no longer show what is asked.

A quick model check

  1. Find the label on the model: code, series, year.
  2. Compare the code with your confirmed entry.
  3. Compare the year with the syllabus you are following.
  4. Decide the use: target, background reading, or set aside.

Worked example

Below, an invented model extract (labelled invented) is attached to a worksheet from a fictional website.

示范作文片段(虚构):雨后的校园格外安静,我沿着走廊慢慢走,听见自己的脚步声。 标注:0523,2022 年

Aiman is entered for 0523, May/June 2027. Step 1: the label says 0523, so the code matches. Step 2: the year says 2022, which is older than 2027.

Step 3: he opens the Cambridge page for 0523 and checks the syllabus for 2027 for any change in task wording. Step 4: until checked, he uses the extract as reading practice, not as a target.

The mistake to watch for

Mistaken approach: “This model scored well, so I will copy its structure for my exam.”

A model does not carry its own authority. It carries a code and a year, and both must match yours. The correction is to check labels first, then use the model for ideas about language, never as a template for length or format.

Check yourself

1. A model is labelled 0509. You are entered for 0547. How do you use it?

Show answer

As background reading only, not as a target for your own answers. The routes are not interchangeable.

2. A model has no year. What do you do?

Show answer

Treat it as unconfirmed. Ask a teacher or compare it with your syllabus before using it as a guide.

3. Name the two labels to check on every model.

Show answer

The qualification code (route) and the exam year or syllabus version.

Where this leads next

Continue to verifying the script and response instructions. The writing revision compare view helps you compare drafts once you know the target.

If your files from different sources are tangled, Chinese tuition with an assigned teacher can start by sorting them.

Questions people ask

Do model answers go out of date?

Syllabuses can be revised, and task wording or mark schemes may change between exam years. A model written for an older version is a useful reading sample at most. Check the syllabus for your exam year before treating any model as a target.

Where do I find the current syllabus for my year?

Use the Cambridge subject page for your confirmed code and look for the syllabus document covering your exam year. If the page lists more than one version, choose the one that names your series.

Can I still read models from another route?

Yes, for extra reading, as long as you label them as another route. Do not copy their task style, length or structure into your own preparation.

Your next step

If you are collecting models from several sources, a one-to-one teacher can sort which ones fit your confirmed entry and which to set aside.

Paid one-hour trial at your assigned teacher’s confirmed rate, starting from RM80. Other fees, schedules and ongoing arrangements are confirmed directly with your teacher after the trial class.
