Distinguish 0509, 0523 and 0547 using the actual entry

A teacher says 'Chinese' and a friend says 'Chinese', yet you may be talking about different qualifications.

To tell the three codes apart, read the code on your own entry confirmation: 0509 is First Language Chinese, 0523 is Second Language Chinese and 0547 is Mandarin Foreign Language. The name in everyday speech is not enough.

This is the first step in Chinese qualification identification, and it comes before any resource search.

What does each code stand for?

The names come from Cambridge. 0509 is First Language Chinese, 0523 is Second Language Chinese and 0547 is Chinese (Mandarin) Foreign Language.

Their scope and task demands differ and are not interchangeable. The current detail sits on each Cambridge subject page, which is where to check it.

How do you read an entry?

  1. Find the code: a four-digit number beginning with 05.
  2. Match the title next to it with the Cambridge name.
  3. Note the series and year of the exam.
  4. Keep a copy with your notes.

Worked example

Here is an invented entry slip, labelled as such, for a fictional student.

考生:陈志明(虚构) 科目:华文 代码:0509 考试:2027 年 5/6 月

Step 1: the code is 0509. Step 2: the Cambridge name for 0509 is First Language Chinese. Step 3: series and year are May/June 2027. Step 4: he saves the slip and checks the 0509 page for the 2027 syllabus.

Notice that “华文” on its own did not give the answer. The code did.

The mistake to watch for

Mistaken approach: “My school’s subject is called 华文, so I am doing the First Language one.”

Only the code confirms that. The same word 华文 could be used loosely for any of the three. The correction is to ask for the code and compare it with the Cambridge title.

Check yourself

1. A slip says 科目:中文 and nothing else. What do you do?

Show answer

Ask the exam centre for the syllabus code and exam series. A subject name alone does not identify the qualification.

2. A slip shows 0547. Which Cambridge title does it match?

Show answer

Chinese (Mandarin) Foreign Language. Check the Cambridge page for current details.

3. Why keep a copy of the entry?

Show answer

It lets you compare model answers and past papers with the confirmed code, and shows your teacher exactly what you are preparing for.

Where this leads next

Next, check the exam year and language route before using a model. The summary selection and paraphrase studio is a useful tool once your route is clear.

Questions people ask

What exactly should I ask my school for?

Ask for the syllabus code, the subject title as registered, and the exam series and year. Ask for it in writing, for example by message or a printed entry slip, so that you can keep it with your revision notes and compare it with the Cambridge page.

What if my school says only 'Chinese'?

Reply asking for the Cambridge syllabus code. A subject name without a code is not enough, because three different qualifications can all be described as Chinese in everyday speech.

Is a past paper cover page proof of my code?

It shows the code of that paper, not yours. Use it only after your own entry has confirmed the same code.
