Writing accuracy and feedback

Your ideas are there, but the draft comes back with marks you do not quite know how to use.

This module is about the last mile of writing: repairing a sentence that sounds foreign, a reference that is unclear, a phrase that repeats itself, and then using teacher feedback to write a better next draft. It sits within IGCSE Chinese and Mandarin pathways. Check which qualification you are entered for (0509, 0523 or 0547) on the Cambridge subject page. Chinese examples stay in Simplified Chinese with pinyin.

What should you know before you start?

You should be able to write complete sentences with common verbs and measure words. You should also be able to read a teacher’s comment in Chinese or English. Advanced vocabulary is not needed, as the lessons reuse simple sentences.

One worked example to orient you

An invented student writes: 我看书在图书馆昨天很认真。 (wǒ kàn shū zài túshūguǎn zuótiān hěn rènzhēn)

The teacher circles the sentence and writes 语序不当. The repair puts who, when, where, how and the action in order: 我昨天在图书馆很认真地看书。

That one repair uses the first lesson. The same sentence might also meet an unclear 他, a doubled phrase, or a 在 typed for 再. The module teaches each separately, then together.

In what order should you study the lessons?

  1. Repair an unnatural word order. It fixes the commonest “translated English” sound.
  2. Clarify a missing subject or reference. Once the order is right, make sure the reader knows who acts.
  3. Remove a redundant phrase. Then cut the echoes without losing facts.
  4. Distinguish content revision from handwriting or typing issues. Learn to read the red marks properly.
  5. Turn teacher feedback into a concrete next draft. Finish by turning comments into action.

What are the common traps?

  • Fixing only the circled word and not rebuilding the sentence.
  • Replacing every pronoun with a name, so the paragraph reads like a list.
  • Deleting a word that carried a fact in the name of “being concise”.
  • Answering a content comment with neater handwriting.
  • Swapping synonyms and calling it a revision.

How should you use the practice set?

Do the original mixed practice after the third lesson, then again after the fifth. Write your own repair first, then open the answer. Note which error type repeats, and return to that lesson. The writing revision compare view helps you compare old and new drafts, and the audience register and purpose planner helps when the comment is about tone.

If you want a second reader for your own drafts, online one-to-one Chinese tuition offers experienced teachers assigned to you, with a paid one-hour trial from RM80, confirmed before the lesson.

Questions people ask

Is this module for a particular Chinese qualification?

The repair skills help any Chinese writing task. Cambridge lists 0509, 0523 and 0547 as different qualifications with different task demands, so confirm which one you are entered for on the Cambridge subject page.

Will the examples be in Chinese?

Yes. Chinese examples and model answers stay in Simplified Chinese in every language version of this site, with pinyin where it helps you read them.

How long does each lesson take?

Plan on twenty to thirty minutes with the self-check. Write your own repair before you open each answer.

Can I use this without a teacher?

Yes. The lessons and practice set work for self-study. A teacher helps most when you cannot see the weakness in your own sentences.
