Distinguish content revision from handwriting or typing issues

Your draft comes back covered in red, and it is hard to tell which marks need new thinking and which need a sharper pen.

Teacher feedback on Chinese writing mixes two kinds of problems. Content revision changes what you say or how it is organised. Handwriting or typing issues change how a character looks or which character appears.

This lesson helps you tell them apart, because each needs a different kind of work. Chinese examples stay in Simplified Chinese with pinyin.

How do you tell the two kinds apart?

Ask one question: if I fix this mark and nothing else, does the writing say something different?

Feedback typeTestExampleFix
ContentThe idea or order changes这个办法很好 (zhège bànfǎ hěn hǎo): good in what way?Add a reason or detail
TypingSame idea, wrong character chosen以经 for 已经 (yǐjīng)Replace the character
HandwritingSame character, unclear strokes己 written where 已 is meantRewrite with correct strokes

Worked example

Invented draft sentences, with the marks a teacher might make.

  1. 我以经做完功课了。
  2. 明天我们在见。
  3. 这个办法很好。(?)
  4. 我把作业交给老师,己经检查过了。(handwritten: strokes unclear)

Step 1, sort sentence 1. 以经 is not a word. The intended word is 已经 (yǐjīng). This is a typing homophone: 以 and 已 both sound yǐ. Fix: 已经.

Step 2, sort sentence 2. 在见 should be 再见 (zàijiàn). Typing homophone. Fix: 再见.

Step 3, sort sentence 3. The teacher’s question mark means the reader wants a reason. This is content. Fix by adding detail: 这个办法很好,因为每个人都有机会发言。

Step 4, sort sentence 4. The character is meant to be 已 but the stroke is closed, so it reads as 己. This is handwriting. Fix: write 已 with the last stroke open.

Result: two typing slips, one content change, one handwriting repair. Only sentence 3 needs more thinking.

The mistake to watch for

A common error is treating a content comment as a character comment.

Mistaken response: The student rewrote 这个办法很好 neatly, with every stroke clear.

The reader’s question was still not answered.

Neat writing does not give the reader a reason. Equally, adding a long explanation will not fix 以经. Match the repair to the type: content gets new thinking, characters get proofreading.

Check yourself

Name the type (content, typing or handwriting) and give the fix.

1. 我明天在来找你。

Show answer

Typing. 在 and 再 sound the same (zài). The idea is “again”, so the fix is 我明天再来找你。

2. The teacher writes beside your paragraph: “例子不够具体”.

Show answer

Content. Replace the general example with one person, one place and one event.

3. 末 and 未 look the same in your handwriting.

Show answer

Handwriting. In 未 the upper stroke is shorter than the lower one; in 末 it is longer. Practise the two side by side.

Where this leads next

Once you can sort feedback, the next step is to turn teacher feedback into a concrete next draft. Use the writing revision compare view to see what changed, and the audience register and purpose planner when the comment is about tone.

A teacher reading your work in real time can see which comments you misread. That is one reason students choose online one-to-one Chinese tuition.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between 错别字 and a content problem?

A 错别字 is a wrong or badly formed character, such as 以经 for 已经. The idea is fine and only the character needs fixing. A content problem means the idea, example or order needs rethinking, so a character correction will not solve it.

Why do I get homophone mistakes when typing pinyin?

Pinyin input offers several characters for one sound, and a quick choice can land on the wrong one. Common pairs are 在 and 再, 的 and 得, 以 and 已. The habit that helps is rereading the typed characters, not the pinyin you meant.

Is my handwriting a content issue?

No. Handwriting affects whether a character can be read. If a stroke is missing or two characters look alike, a reader may take it as a different character. Writing clearly is a separate habit from improving ideas.

Will I handwrite or type in my exam?

That depends on the qualification, the task and arrangements at your exam centre. Ask your centre and read the current syllabus on the Cambridge subject page, then practise in the way you will be assessed.
