A sentence with an unnatural word order has the right words in the wrong places, so the reader has to rebuild it. This lesson gives you a default order to repair against.
It matters in any writing task, and teacher feedback such as 不通顺 or 语序不当 usually points here. Chinese examples stay in Simplified Chinese with pinyin.
What is the default order of a Chinese sentence?
A dependable pattern is: who, when, where, how, do what, to what.
| Slot | Example | Pinyin |
|---|---|---|
| Who | 我 | wǒ |
| When | 昨天 | zuótiān |
| Where | 在图书馆 | zài túshūguǎn |
| How | 很认真地 | hěn rènzhēn de |
| Do what | 看 | kàn |
| To what | 书 | shū |
Put together: 我昨天在图书馆很认真地看书。 Time and place come before the verb. This is the biggest difference from English, where “I read books carefully in the library yesterday” ends with place and time.
Worked example
The invented student Weiqi writes: 我看书在图书馆昨天很认真。 The words are fine, but the order copies English.
Step 1, find the verb and the object. The action is 看书 (kàn shū).
Step 2, find the words that say who, when, where and how. 我 (who), 昨天 (when), 在图书馆 (where), 很认真 (how).
Step 3, move them before the verb in the default order. 我 + 昨天 + 在图书馆 + 很认真地 + 看书.
Step 4, add 地 (de) after a descriptive word when it modifies a verb. 很认真地看书.
Repaired sentence: 我昨天在图书馆很认真地看书。
Read it again aloud. It should now sound like one smooth thought.
The mistake to watch for
A half-repair is common. The student only moves the time word.
Mistaken correction: 我昨天看书在图书馆很认真。
Time is fixed, but 在图书馆 still trails the verb and 很认真 is still loose.
The cause is fixing the word the teacher circled and not checking the rest. Rebuild the whole sentence through the slots. A place phrase with 在 normally comes before the main verb: 在图书馆看书, not 看书在图书馆.

Where this leads next
Order is only one source of unclear sentences. Next, learn to clarify a missing subject or reference so the reader knows who is acting. Compare drafts in the writing revision compare view, and test everything in the module practice set.
Some students can repair a sentence when told which one is wrong, but not find it alone. That is where online one-to-one Chinese tuition can help, because a teacher reads your drafts as a reader would.
