Ask for clarification in Malay

Someone asks a question, one word slips past you, and the safest-feeling choice seems to be saying nothing.

  6. Where this leads next

When you miss a word or a whole question, ask for help in Malay instead of going silent or guessing. A short, polite phrase keeps the conversation going and gives you a second chance to hear the question.

This lesson follows extending a response and is part of spoken interaction.

Which phrases do you need?

Keep a small kit that you can say without thinking:

SituationPhrase
You did not hearMaaf, boleh ulang soalan itu?
The speaker is too fastBoleh cakap perlahan sedikit?
You do not know a wordApakah maksud “perpustakaan”?
You want to checkAdakah maksud anda…?
You caught part of itSaya faham bahagian pertama, tetapi saya tidak faham perkataan ”…”

Polite openers such as Maaf and Terima kasih make every phrase sound natural.

How do you use them in a conversation?

  1. Say what you did understand, if anything. It narrows the problem for the listener.
  2. Ask about one thing only: the word, the speed, or the whole question.
  3. Check your guess with Adakah maksud anda…? before you answer.
  4. Thank the speaker and answer fully, using the extension habit from the previous lesson.

Worked example

This short dialogue is invented for practice. The examiner is an invented speaker.

The student asked about one word, got a short explanation, and then gave a full extended answer.

The mistake to watch for

A common slip is to guess the question and answer confidently.

Question: Apakah aktiviti yang anda lakukan semasa cuti sekolah?

Mistaken answer: Cuti sekolah bermula pada bulan Disember.

The student heard cuti sekolah and answered a different question. The correction is a quick check before answering: Maaf, adakah maksud anda perkara yang saya buat semasa cuti? A five-second check protects the whole answer.

Check yourself

1. You missed the whole question. Which phrase do you use?

Show answer

Maaf, boleh ulang soalan itu?

2. The examiner says Bagaimana anda menghabiskan masa lapang? and you do not know masa lapang. Ask about it.

Show answer

Maaf, apakah maksud “masa lapang”? After the explanation (time when you are free), you can answer: Saya menghabiskan masa lapang dengan menonton filem.

3. What is the problem with answering Ya when you did not understand?

Show answer

You may give an answer that does not fit the question, and the listener cannot tell what you understood. A short clarification keeps the answer relevant.

Where this leads next

Use clarification phrases again in describing a supplied picture, where you may need to ask about a word in the task. Then try the spoken interaction practice set.

If you freeze when you do not understand, short live drills in online one-to-one Malay tuition can make these phrases automatic.

Questions people ask

Will asking for clarification make me look weak?

In a real conversation, asking is a normal and useful skill. It shows you are following the topic and want to answer the right question. Staying silent, or answering a question you guessed, usually does more harm.

How many clarification phrases should I learn?

Four or five are enough: one to ask for repetition, one for slower speech, one for the meaning of a word, one to check your understanding, and one to say you did not catch a word. Use them until they are automatic.

Should I ask in English if I forget the Malay?

Try the Malay phrase first, even in a simplified form such as Maaf, ulang? Check the current syllabus for what your speaking component expects, and practise staying in Malay as far as you can.
