Describe a supplied picture without inventing unseen facts

A picture appears, you want to sound impressive, and suddenly you are giving names and ages that are nowhere in the image.

To describe a picture well, say what you can see first, then mark anything you are guessing. Marking a guess with a word like mungkin keeps your description accurate and your Malay natural.

This lesson builds on extending a response and asking for clarification in spoken interaction.

What can you say, in what order?

Work from the whole to the detail:

  1. Place: Gambar ini menunjukkan sebuah pasar. (This picture shows a market.)
  2. People and objects: Saya nampak dua orang dan sebuah bakul.
  3. Position: di sebelah kiri, di tengah-tengah, di belakang, di atas meja.
  4. Action: Seorang perempuan sedang membeli sayur.
  5. Guess or opinion, marked: Mungkin hari ini hari cuti.

Use sedang for what is happening now, and ada to say something is present.

Worked example

Imagine a picture described as follows. This picture is invented for practice, and it is not from an exam paper: a morning market with a woman buying vegetables at a stall, a man weighing fruit, a child holding a red bag, and a bus in the background.

Model description:

Gambar ini menunjukkan sebuah pasar pada waktu pagi. Di sebelah kiri, seorang perempuan sedang membeli sayur di sebuah gerai. Di tengah-tengah gambar, seorang lelaki sedang menimbang buah. Di hadapan mereka, ada seorang budak yang memegang beg merah. Di belakang, saya nampak sebuah bas. Mungkin budak itu mengikut ibunya membeli barang.

Every sentence before the last uses what the picture shows. The final sentence is marked with mungkin, so it is honestly a guess.

The mistake to watch for

A common slip is to state invented facts as certain.

Mistaken description: Perempuan itu bernama Siti. Dia berumur empat puluh tahun dan dia membeli sayur untuk makan malam.

Nothing in the picture gives her name, her age or her dinner plans. The correction is to keep to what is visible and mark the rest: Seorang perempuan sedang membeli sayur. Mungkin dia akan memasak di rumah.

Check yourself

1. The picture shows a boy holding an umbrella, with wet ground. Say one safe sentence and one marked guess.

Show answer

Safe: Seorang budak lelaki memegang payung. Guess: Mungkin hari sedang hujan. The wet ground supports the guess, but you still mark it.

2. Which sentence invents a fact: Ada sebuah kereta di belakang or Kereta itu milik Encik Ali?

Show answer

The second. A picture rarely shows who owns a car. The first only reports what is visible.

3. You forget the word for a bridge. How do you still describe it?

Show answer

Describe it: Ada sesuatu di atas sungai supaya orang boleh melintas. If the task allows, ask for the word with a clarification phrase.

Where this leads next

After a description, the speaker often asks about your own life, so continue to responding to a follow-up question. Test the whole cluster in the mixed practice set.

If you tend to freeze when you see a new picture, practise with different images and live feedback in online one-to-one Malay tuition.

Questions people ask

Can I give my opinion about a picture?

Yes, if the task allows it, but separate it from description. First say what you can see, then use a phrase such as pada pendapat saya or mungkin to mark an opinion or a guess. Check your task wording to see what is asked.

What if I do not know the Malay word for something in the picture?

Describe it with words you do know: its colour, size, position or use. For example, say benda berwarna merah di atas meja. Then, if the task allows, ask for the word using a clarification phrase.

Is it wrong to guess what is happening?

A careful guess is useful when you label it. Say Mungkin mereka sedang menunggu bas. Do not say it as a fact, because the picture may not show it.
