Spoken interaction: original mixed practice with explanations

Reading about speaking only helps once you have said the words aloud and checked what came out.

This set practises the five skills in spoken interaction. Each question has a model answer that you open only after you have tried it aloud.

Say your answer first, then compare structure, not exact words. All speakers, pictures and dialogues here are invented for practice.

How should you use this set?

  1. Cover the answer, read the question, and say your reply aloud.
  2. Open the answer and compare the structure: answer, reason, detail.
  3. Record one or two replies if you like, and review them with the recording checklist.
  4. Note any repeated mistake in your mistake log.

Questions

1. (Extension, easy) Answer and extend: Apakah makanan kegemaran anda?

Show answer

Structure: answer, reason, detail. Any food with a reason and a detail is fine.

2. (Extension, easy) Add a reason and a detail: Saya suka hujung minggu.

Show answer

The reason uses kerana, the detail gives a day and an activity.

3. (Clarification, easy) You did not hear the question at all. What do you say?

Show answer

Maaf, boleh ulang soalan itu? You may add Terima kasih after the repeat. See asking for clarification.

4. (Clarification, medium) The examiner asks Apakah hobi anda? and you do not know hobi. Ask about it, then answer.

Show answer

Maaf, apakah maksud “hobi”? After the explanation (an activity you enjoy in your free time): Hobi saya ialah melukis kerana saya suka warna. Saya melukis di bilik saya selepas makan malam.

5. (Picture, medium) An invented picture shows a library with two students reading, a shelf of books on the left and a clock on the wall. Describe it with one marked guess.

Show answer

The last sentence is a marked guess. See describing a picture.

6. (Picture, medium) Which sentence invents a fact: Ada seekor kucing di atas kerusi or Kucing itu bernama Comel dan berumur dua tahun?

Show answer

The second. A picture does not give a cat’s name or age. The first only reports what is visible.

7. (Follow-up, medium) The examiner asks Mengapa anda suka membaca? Answer with a reason and a detail.

Show answer

Model: Saya suka membaca kerana saya dapat belajar perkara baharu. Contohnya, buku tentang angkasa membuat saya ingin tahu lebih banyak. The reason comes first because the question word is mengapa.

8. (Follow-up, harder) After you say you like football, the examiner asks Apa lagi yang anda suka? Reply without repeating football.

Show answer

The reply adds a new item, a reason and a detail.

9. (Mixed, harder) The examiner asks Bagaimana anda pergi ke sekolah? and then Adakah anda suka cara itu? Answer both.

Show answer

The first reply gives a manner, the second a yes with a reason.

10. (Review, harder) A recording says: Saya suka sukan. Saya suka sukan. Saya main sukan. Give two checklist findings and a better version.

Show answer

Findings: extension is missing (one idea repeated, no reason or detail), and the answer lacks a specific sport. Better: Saya suka sukan, terutamanya badminton, kerana ia menyeronokkan. Saya bermain badminton dengan kawan setiap Rabu petang.

Questions people ask

Should I write my answers or say them?

Say them aloud, ideally while recording on your own device. Writing helps you plan, but the skill is speaking. Then compare your structure with the model answer. Your wording can differ and still be correct.

Are these questions from Cambridge papers?

No. All questions, dialogues and pictures here are original and written for practice. Use the Cambridge subject page for official specimen materials and for the current speaking component format.

How should I mark myself?

Do not look for an exact match. Check whether you answered the question, gave a reason and a detail, and kept to what the picture shows. Note one change to try next time.
