0509 is the Cambridge code for IGCSE Chinese (First Language). It identifies the qualification on entry forms, syllabus documents and specimen papers, and it is the first thing to confirm before you choose what to read, write or revise.
This page states only what is stable and tells you where to check the rest. The official source is always the Cambridge subject page linked below.
What does the code tell you?
The code names the qualification, not your exam year. The same code appears year after year, and Cambridge issues syllabus documents for a run of exam years. So you need two facts together: the code and your exam year.
Cambridge lists three Chinese codes that are easy to mix up: 0509, 0523 and 0547. Each is its own qualification with its own scope, task demands and entry route.
How do I confirm my syllabus in five steps?
- Ask your school or exam centre for the entry code and exam year on your entry, in writing.
- Open the Cambridge 0509 subject page and find the syllabus document listed for your exam year.
- Record the document name and year at the start of your revision file.
- Use the syllabus navigator to note what you confirmed and what is still unresolved.
- Compare versions with the syllabus version viewer if your notes or textbooks come from an earlier year.
Does my home language decide the code?
No, and this is the most common wrong turn. A student who speaks Chinese at home may be entered for a different code from the one a friend at the same school uses. A student who learns Chinese mostly at school may be entered for 0509.
The entry decides. If your materials and your entry do not agree, stop and ask before spending weeks on the wrong kind of practice.
What should I check with my exam centre?
Your exam centre handles things we and this site cannot. Ask them:
- Which exam series am I entered for? Do not assume a series.
- Is my entry code 0509, and is it written on my entry confirmation?
- What are the registration and entry deadlines?
- Do any access arrangements apply to my entry?
Private candidates also deal with the centre and Cambridge directly. Follow the Cambridge private candidate guidance and confirm details with the centre you plan to use.
A short example of using the code
A student has two resources. One is a school 华文 composition workbook. The other is a course book for learners who are new to Mandarin, with short dialogues such as “你今天去哪里?”.
The student’s entry form says 0509. The student opens the 0509 subject page, records the syllabus document for their exam year, and labels the course book “check route first”. The composition workbook stays in the plan because its writing tasks can be compared with the 0509 documents. The dialogue book is set aside until a teacher confirms whether any of it helps.
The habit matters more than the answer: the code decides what goes into the plan.
What do we not state here?
We do not list paper numbers, durations, weightings, grade thresholds or assessment dates on this page. Those belong to Cambridge and can change between syllabus versions. The subject page and the syllabus document for your exam year are where to read them.
Assessed Chinese-language work stays in Chinese. Check the script and response instructions for your route on the Cambridge page for your exam year.
Where to go next
If you are not sure your resources fit, read I cannot tell whether the resource fits 0509, 0523 or 0547 and the lesson on telling the three entries apart. Then build a plan with the study route guide, read the assessment guide and see the whole subject in the Chinese learning guide.
Once your code and year are confirmed, online one-to-one Chinese tuition can start from the right syllabus instead of a guess.
