0523 is the Cambridge code for IGCSE Chinese (Second Language). It identifies the qualification on entry forms, syllabus documents and specimen papers. Confirm it before you decide what to revise.
This page states only what is stable and sends you to Cambridge for the rest. The Cambridge subject page is the official source.
What does the code tell you?
The code names the qualification, not your exam year. Cambridge publishes syllabus documents for a run of exam years, and notices about a syllabus appear on the subject page. You need the code and your exam year together.
Three Chinese codes sit close together: 0509, 0523 and 0547. They are not interchangeable in scope, task demands or entry route.
How do I confirm my syllabus in five steps?
- Ask your school or exam centre for the entry code and exam year on your entry, in writing.
- Open the Cambridge 0523 subject page and find the syllabus document for your exam year.
- Read any notices on the page and note the date you checked.
- Use the syllabus navigator to list what is confirmed and what is still unresolved.
- Compare versions with the syllabus version viewer if your notes come from an earlier syllabus.
Why should I be careful with similar qualification names?
Names such as “Second Language” and “Foreign Language” sound close, and both suit readers who meet Chinese as a language to be learned. That closeness is the risk. A worksheet, a vocabulary list or a past paper labelled for one code can train a different skill from the one your paper tests.
The safe habit is to match every resource to your own code before you use it. If you cannot tell, use the resource fit guide and ask before you invest time.
What should I check with my exam centre?
Your exam centre can answer these. Ask them:
- Which exam series am I entered for? Do not assume one.
- Is my entry code 0523, and is it written on my confirmation?
- What are the registration and entry deadlines?
- Do any access arrangements apply to my entry?
Private candidates deal with the centre and Cambridge directly. Confirm the details with the centre you plan to use.
A short example of using the code
A student is given a practice passage that begins “小红的奶奶每天早上都去公园打太极拳。” It came from a cousin who studies a different Chinese qualification, and the cousin’s sheet is marked 0509.
The student’s own entry says 0523. The student records the 0523 syllabus document for their exam year, marks the passage “reading practice only, route not matched”, and brings it to a teacher.
The passage still trains reading. The task questions on the sheet are not treated as 0523 practice until they are compared with the 0523 documents.
The code decides how each resource is used.
What do we not state here?
Take paper numbers, durations, weightings and grade thresholds from the current Cambridge syllabus for your exam year. Those belong to Cambridge and can change between versions. Assessed Chinese-language work stays in Chinese, and the script and response instructions for your route are on the Cambridge page for your exam year.
Where to go next
Read how to tell 0509, 0523 and 0547 apart using your actual entry, build a plan with the study route guide, and read the assessment guide. The Chinese learning guide shows the whole subject.
When your code and year are confirmed, online one-to-one Chinese tuition can start from the right syllabus.
