I cannot tell whether the resource fits 0509, 0523 or 0547

You found a Chinese paper online and cannot tell whether it belongs to your qualification or a different one.

A Chinese resource fits your code only if it names the same qualification, belongs to your exam year’s scope, and asks for the same kind of task. This page gives you a three-step check and a worked example.

What is the student’s moment?

“This paper says Chinese. My exam says Chinese. Surely it is the same thing.”

It is an easy assumption, because 0509, 0523 and 0547 all have Chinese in the name. They are separate qualifications, so a resource can look right and train the wrong skill.

The syllabus and exam-year navigator helps you find the right page, and the lesson Choose a practice task that fits the confirmed qualification goes deeper.

A worked example with three resources

A student is entered for 0523. She has three resources and needs to decide what each is good for.

Resource A. A printed paper that names 0523 and the year of her exam. Verdict: fits. Use it as the main practice, and check the instructions against the syllabus.

Resource B. A set of model essays with no code. The essay titles ask for a personal reflection: 写一篇文章,谈谈你对“坚持”的理解。 Verdict: unverified. The task reads like extended composition, and she cannot tell which code it was written for. She keeps it aside until a teacher confirms.

Resource C. A worksheet about asking for directions and ordering food, with a note that it is for beginners of Mandarin as a foreign language. Verdict: for a different route. The scenarios are useful for oral fluency, but they are not her route’s task demands.

Her sorted list says: A for practice, B on hold, C for light reading only. She writes the reason next to each one.

The three-step check

  1. Name. Does the resource state your code, or only the word Chinese? A missing code means unverified.
  2. Year. Is the exam year on the resource the same as your scope? An older year needs a comparison with the current syllabus.
  3. Task. Does the instruction match the tasks in your syllabus? If the paper asks for something your syllabus does not list, it is not a fit.

If the answer to any step is unclear, ask before you use the resource for more than general reading.

A plausible mistake

A student with a 0523 entry studies from a book of 0509 model essays because the writing is impressive. Her own answers start to imitate the ornate style, but her tasks ask for clear, organised writing on a given topic.

The marks do not rise, because the skill she practised is not the skill her paper rewards. The correction is to switch to tasks from her own code and to use the impressive essays only as reading.

A self-check

1. A worksheet says “Chinese practice” with no code or year. What is its status?

Show answer

Unverified. It may still be useful for general reading, but do not use it as exam-style practice until you confirm the code and the year against your syllabus.

2. A paper names 0547 and you are entered for 0509. Can you use it?

Show answer

Not as exam-style practice. The qualifications are separate. You may borrow a passage for reading, but the tasks and scope belong to 0547.

3. What is the first thing to check if a friend passes you a paper?

Show answer

The code and the exam year printed on the paper, compared with your own entry document. Only then look at the questions.

What to do next

Write your code and year at the head of a page and sort each resource under it: fits, unverified, other route. Then use the study route guide to plan the week with the resources that fit. The assessment guide lists what to check on the Cambridge page.

Questions people ask

Can I use a 0509 paper to practise for 0523?

Use it with care. The two qualifications have different scope and task demands, so the paper may train a skill your exam does not test. A general reading passage can still be useful, but do not treat the marks or the question style as a preview of your own paper.

Does the exam year matter for a resource?

Yes. A syllabus can change between years, so a resource written for another year may not match your scope. Check the year on the resource, then compare it with the syllabus for your exam year on the Cambridge page.

What if the resource does not name a code?

Treat it as unverified. Look at the task wording and compare it with your syllabus. If you still cannot tell, ask your teacher or exam centre, and use it only for general reading or vocabulary in the meantime.

Is a resource from my school always right for my code?

Usually it was chosen for your class, but confirm that it matches your own entry. A mixed class may use shared materials, so check the code and year rather than assume.
