I need to distinguish 0450 from 0264

Your notes say one code, your school says another, and you are not sure which one you are actually sitting.

0450 is Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies and 0264 is Cambridge IGCSE Business, identified by Cambridge for first assessment in 2027. To know which one is yours, you need your exam year and your entry code, and then you check both against the Cambridge subject pages.

This page teaches the sorting routine with a fictional student. We state only what the code facts are and tell you where to check the rest, because syllabus details belong to Cambridge.

Why does this confuse so many students?

Search results, tuition notes and textbooks often say “IGCSE Business Studies” for both. The title changed, but the subject label people use did not. A revision book printed some years ago may carry 0450, a school worksheet may say 0264, and a past paper may show either.

The confusion is not a failing on your part. It is a labelling problem, and the solution is to label every resource yourself.

A routine to sort out your code

  1. Ask your school or exam centre for your entry code and your exam year, in writing.
  2. Open the Cambridge subject page for that code and find the syllabus document listed for your year.
  3. Write the document name and year at the start of your revision file.
  4. Use the syllabus navigator to note what you have confirmed and what is still unresolved.
  5. Label each resource as “matches”, “check first” or “set aside”, using the version comparison viewer for anything older.

If the navigator returns a transition check for your combination, treat that as a real instruction: confirm with Cambridge and your centre before you revise from older notes.

Worked example

Wei Jie is a fictional student. His entry form says 0264 with an exam year in 2027. He owns three things:

  • a revision book with “Business Studies 0450” on the cover,
  • a set of school notes with no code,
  • a past paper labelled 0264.

He follows the routine.

Step 1. He checks the entry form: code 0264, year 2027.

Step 2. He opens the Cambridge 0264 subject page and confirms that the syllabus document lists his year.

Step 3. He writes at the start of the file: “0264 syllabus document for 2027, confirmed on the Cambridge page.”

Step 4. He builds a small resource log.

ResourceCode shownStatusNext action
Revision book0450Check firstCompare each chapter heading with the 0264 topic list
School notesNoneCheck firstAsk the teacher which syllabus they follow
Past paper0264MatchesUse for practice

Step 5. He asks his teacher about the school notes and compares the book’s chapters with the syllabus document, marking each chapter “matches” or “set aside”.

Notice that Wei Jie does not guess which ideas changed. He treats the book as unchecked until the comparison is done.

The mistake to avoid

Mistaken approach: “The subject is the same, so all 0450 notes are fine for 0264.”

This assumes the two syllabus documents match. Wording, topic list or assessment can differ, and only the official documents tell you where.

The correction is to check, not assume, and to record the result.

What should I confirm with my exam centre?

Your exam centre handles entry, not us. Ask the centre:

  • Which code and exam year are you entered for?
  • Which exam series will you sit?
  • What are the entry deadlines?

The exam series question matters. Cambridge’s reference to a first assessment does not tell you which series a Malaysian centre offers.

Self-check

1. A student has a textbook labelled 0450 and an entry form labelled 0264 with an exam year in 2027. What is the first step?

Show answer

Confirm the entry code and year with the exam centre, then open the Cambridge 0264 page and find the syllabus document for that year. The textbook is marked “check first” until compared.

2. Why should you write the syllabus document name at the start of your revision file?

Show answer

It records exactly which document your plan follows. If you later find a difference in a resource, you can compare it with a named source instead of guessing.

3. True or false: a first assessment in 2027 means the exam is in March in Malaysia.

Show answer

False. The wording does not say which series a Malaysian centre offers. Ask your school or exam centre which series you are entered for.

Where to go next

Read the 0450 code guide and the 0264 code guide, then see what to verify for the 2027 change. The 0450 to 0264 transition module has lessons on locating your exam year and spotting resources that predate a change. The Business learning guide shows the whole subject.

Once your code and year are confirmed, online one-to-one Business tuition can be built on the right syllabus document.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between 0450 and 0264?

0450 is the Cambridge code for IGCSE Business Studies. 0264 is the code for Cambridge IGCSE Business, which Cambridge identifies for first assessment in 2027. They are separate syllabus documents, so read the official pages and compare the documents for your year rather than assuming they match.

Which code am I sitting?

It depends on your exam year and what your school or exam centre enters you for. Ask the centre for your entry code and year in writing, then open the relevant Cambridge subject page. Do not decide from a textbook cover or a search result.

Can I use 0450 notes if I am entered for 0264?

Possibly for some ideas, but you must check each topic against the 0264 syllabus before relying on it. Mark old notes as unchecked until you have compared them with the document for your year. The syllabus version comparison viewer on this site can help you record the checks.

Does first assessment in 2027 mean a March exam in Malaysia?

No. Cambridge's wording about first assessment does not tell you which series your centre offers. Ask your school or exam centre which series you are entered for, and do not assume March, May/June or October/November.
