重复的想法，出现在作者换个说法回到同一个要点时，可能在不同段落，也可能借不同人物之口。写摘要时，同一个想法只写一次，用最精确的形式。风险在于把两个只是看起来相似的想法合并了。
这一课接在区分相关要点与有趣的细节之后，也为清晰地为要点分组做准备。
怎样找出重复？
选出相关要点后，把它们列成简短的笔记。然后给每条笔记贴上几个字的标签，点明它的想法。标签相同的笔记，就是可能要合并的对象。
合并之前，对每一对笔记做一项检查：第二条有没有多了原因、人物、结果或程度？ 有，就两条都留；没有，就留较精确的那条。
例题
阅读下面这段原创短文。
The reading room at the school library is far too noisy to study in. Students say they cannot concentrate because of the constant chatter. One librarian admits the low hum of conversation never stops. Some pupils have started taking their books home instead. A few others now stay in the corridor, where it is quieter.
题目： Summarise the problems with the reading room.
第 1 步，笔记：

第 2 步，检验每一对。 前三条是从三个角度说同一件事。第二条多了一个结果（cannot concentrate），第三条多了”持续不断”。所以一个精确的想法就能涵盖三条：constant conversation makes it hard to concentrate.
最后两条都是学生离开阅览室。地点不同（回家和走廊），但想法相同：学生在回避这个房间。
第 3 步，写出来：
The reading room’s constant chatter makes concentration difficult, so some students study elsewhere, at home or in the corridor.
五句变成了一句，题目需要的内容一点没丢。
要留意的错误
相反的错误是合并过头，让真正的差别消失。
原文片段： “The fee is too high for most families. It is also collected without warning, at the start of term.”
错误的合并： The fee is a problem for families.
这两句不是重复。一句说金额，另一句说收取的方式。合并后的版本没有错，但舍弃了一个要点。正确写法是：The fee is too high for most families and is collected without warning.
一个可靠的习惯是：合并前后各数一遍想法的数量。如果减少的数量比你预期的多，就重读你合并过的那些配对。
自我检测
1. 这两句说的是同一件事吗？“The bus is always late.” / “Passengers wait a long time at the stop.”

大体上是。两句都是从乘客的角度描述不可靠。可以合并成 buses arrive late, so passengers wait a long time。只有当原文把原因（班车晚点）和结果（等候）分开，而且题目分别要求时，才需要小心。
2. 这两句应该合并吗？“The club has too few coaches.” / “The club has too few balls.”

句型相同，但缺的东西不同。只有合并成像 the club lacks staff and equipment 这样的概括，才同时保留两者。写成 the club lacks resources 会丢掉差别，所以要看题目需要多精确。
3. 合并成一句：“The pool closes at six. Swimmers must leave by six. Nobody is allowed in after six.”

三句给出的是同一个想法，即关门时间。一个版本就够了：The pool closes at six. 保留确切的时间，因为这是最精确的细节。
